Uber Technologies has taken a monumental step in the realm of autonomous transportation by partnering with Baidu to introduce fully driverless Apollo Go vehicles to riders in Dubai. This initiative marks the first implementation of their strategic collaboration, establishing Dubai as a pioneering market for autonomous vehicle technology. As Uber expands its services, the integration of fully autonomous options showcases its commitment to providing innovative mobility solutions.

Expanding Autonomous Mobility in Dubai

Starting today, riders in Dubai can request an UberX or Uber Comfort and may be matched with an Apollo Go vehicle. For those keen on experiencing fully autonomous rides, the Uber app offers a dedicated “Autonomous” option, making the process seamless. Initially, this novel service will operate in select areas such as Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah, with plans for future expansion to broaden the service range.

Sarfraz Maredia, Uber’s Global Head of Autonomous, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Baidu. He stated, “Launching in Dubai marks the first time our multi-partner vision comes to life on public roads.” This statement highlights Uber’s goal of merging advanced autonomous technology with its vast global marketplace, ultimately leading to an electric, shared, and driverless transportation future.

A Cutting-Edge Vehicle Experience

The Apollo Go service employs the sixth-generation RT6 vehicles, which are specifically designed as fully electric robotaxis for driverless operations. Each vehicle can comfortably accommodate up to three passengers and is equipped with over 30 sensors that facilitate real-time perception of the environment and efficient onboard data processing. This sophisticated technology underlines Uber’s commitment to safety and reliability in autonomous transportation.

Baidu’s Vice President, Nan Yang, also recognizes the significance of this launch. He noted that Dubai is the first city to offer a dual-model ride-hailing service featuring self-operated and partner-based autonomous vehicles internationally. This advancement is expected to enhance the overall benefits of autonomous mobility for riders in the region.

Safety and Global Expansion

Safety continues to be paramount for Uber. All autonomous vehicles, including those from Baidu, must adhere to Uber’s stringent safety guidelines before they can operate on the network. This dedication to safety ensures a secure and reliable experience for all riders, reinforcing public trust in autonomous transportation.

Baidu’s Apollo Go service boasts substantial experience in large-scale deployments, currently covering 28 cities globally and accumulating over 350 million kilometers in autonomous travel. Notably, it has achieved a remarkable safety record with more than 240 million kilometers operated fully driverless. This successful track record serves as a testament to the viability of autonomous vehicles in everyday transportation.

With more than 30 autonomous vehicle partners, Uber is dedicated to making electric and shared transportation accessible and sustainable. By integrating autonomous vehicles into its network, Uber aims to create a hybrid system where drivers and robotaxis coexist, ultimately transforming urban mobility. As the world embraces technological advancements in transportation, this partnership signifies a major leap toward a future where autonomous rides become the norm.
