A Christmas to Remember in the UAE

In 2007, my sister and I, in our mid-twenties, boarded a flight to spend Christmas in the Middle East, embarking on an adventure we had never anticipated. Our father had recently accepted a role as the Australian consul-general in Dubai, following previous diplomatic assignments in countries like South Korea and Malaysia. For our family, exploring new cultures had become a cherished tradition, and we approached this journey with excitement and curiosity.

Over two weeks in the United Arab Emirates, we found ourselves immersed in the vibrant atmosphere of this burgeoning global hub. We tasted delicious Arabic mezze, soared over the desert dunes in exhilarating dune-bashing adventures, and joined a Santa-themed pub crawl on Christmas Eve. The adventures didn’t stop there; we revelled in a lively New Year’s Eve celebration and experienced the beauty of the Musandam Peninsula in Oman on a dhow cruise. Our trip sparked dreams of a new life filled with opportunities—and the tax-free lifestyle was certainly a perk!

Enduring Connections with Dubai

Fast forward nearly 18 years since that pivotal journey, and while I’ve moved on, Dubai remains etched in my heart. Despite my departure in late 2014, I find myself revisiting the UAE frequently. With my sister’s family still residing there, this city continues to feel like a second home. Recent geopolitical tensions have delayed my plans to return, making me acutely aware of how much I miss the dynamic vibrancy of Dubai.

In hindsight, moving to such a bustling city just seven years post-9/11 seemed unconventional to many. However, that experience broadened my understanding of a region often misrepresented. The memories forged during my nearly seven years there are immeasurable, from living in a shared villa in Al Barsha to celebrating significant life events with friends and family.

The Dual Nature of Dubai

Dubai is a place where emotions run deep; it elicits polarized feelings. Many people either adore the city or despise it, likely due to differing perspectives on its values and living conditions. While it’s far from perfect, the benefits of living here often overshadow the drawbacks. This is a remarkably safe city, with a rich tapestry of cultures represented—and a culinary scene to match its diversity. The luxury hotels and lifestyle options provide an enjoyable escape, while its location makes it a convenient jumping-off point for nearby destinations in the region.

Family life in Dubai is equally enriching, offering a wealth of activities from skiing indoors to outdoor adventures. The emirate boasts a vibrant social scene, with a large expat community that encourages interactions and friendships. I took part in thrilling activities, including skydiving over Palm Jumeirah and witnessing local camel racing, each experience deepening my connection to this unique locale.

Lasting Memories and Cultural Tapestry

The generosity and hospitality of Emiratis have always been uplifting. Though I had limited interactions with locals, I was fortunate to join several Ramadan festivities, sharing meals and celebrating special occasions with families in my neighborhood. Observing the UAE’s growth and learning from its multicultural environment made my time there truly rewarding.

Reflecting on the myriad experiences and transformations I’ve undergone alongside the city, it’s clear that Dubai will always be intertwined with my family’s story. Whether through joyful celebrations, personal milestones, or simply exploring the ever-evolving landscape, this city holds a permanent place in our hearts—and will continue to inspire future journeys.
