My Journey to the UAE and Its Lasting Impact on Me
In the captivating series “My Happy Place,” writers share their reflections on cherished holiday destinations across Australia and beyond. Today, we delve into the author’s personal journey from Sydney to Dubai, highlighting the emotional connection formed with the city and the unforgettable experiences that shaped her life.
First Impressions of Dubai
In 2007, my sister and I embarked on an adventure that would redefine our perceptions of the Middle East. At just 25 and 27, we flew to Dubai, uncertain what to expect from this emerging global hub. Our father had accepted a diplomatic role, and our family’s wanderlust meant we approached new locations with excitement. As we arrived in the United Arab Emirates, we quickly became enamored with the local culture, indulging in delectable Arabic cuisine and experiencing the rush of dune-bashing. The festivities continued as we celebrated Christmas in a vibrant local pub and welcomed the New Year in style.
Over the course of our two-week stay, we forged lasting memories. We explored the dazzling souqs, admired the grandeur of the Musandam Peninsula, and reveled in the festivities that Dubai had to offer. The potential for a new home filled our thoughts, especially in a city known for its tax-free benefits and endless opportunities.
A Home Away from Home
Nearly two decades have passed since I first moved to Dubai, and although I left the city in 2014, it remains an integral part of my identity. I often return, driven by the desire to reconnect with friends and family who still call this metropolis home. This past year, the pandemic and geopolitical tensions kept me away, emphasizing just how much I miss the vibrant culture and the warmth of my community there.
My early days in Dubai were met with skepticism from those around me. The aftermath of 9/11 led many to question my choice to establish a life in the Middle East during Ramadan. However, the years that followed were transformative. Living in a diverse city with people from all walks of life challenged my preconceived notions and broadened my worldview.
Experiences That Shaped My Love for Dubai
My life in Dubai was brimming with unique experiences. I shared a home with my family, where laughter and camaraderie filled the air. Many fond memories date back to when I landed my dream job. Those moments are forever etched in my mind, especially the day I held my newborn niece for the first time.
Many are polarized about Dubai; opinions vary dramatically. Some criticize its perceived inadequacies or what it represents. While the city has its flaws, such as labor issues, I focus on the positive aspects. Dubai is celebrated for its safety, diverse culture, and outstanding dining options, making it a culinary paradise. Additionally, the opportunity to travel to nearby countries was an exhilarating perk, granting me insights into regions that many outside of the area misunderstand.
The Enduring Allure of Dubai
Dubai is not just a tourist destination; it’s a family-friendly city that offers a myriad of activities. From skiing to surfing, and camping to mountain biking, there’s no shortage of adventure. The unique nightlife and party culture, combined with a lively expatriate community, create a dynamic social scene. Unlike other cities, Dubai fosters connections easily, making it simple to engage with friends and acquaintances.
Despite its contradictions, Dubai has imprinted itself deeply in my heart. The warmth and generosity of its people, particularly the locals who share their customs and traditions during events like Ramadan, have enriched my life. My experiences in this remarkable city have shaped who I am today, and the evolution of Dubai parallels my own journey. No matter where life takes me, Dubai will always remain a cherished chapter of my story.
