An Unexpected Adventure Begins

In 2007, my sister and I ventured to the Middle East for our first taste of this vast region. At just 25 and 27 years old, we embraced the adventure sparked by our father’s role as the Australian consul-general in Dubai. Having traveled through South Korea, Malaysia, and China during his past postings, we were eager to explore this new locale with open hearts and minds.

Over two exhilarating weeks in the United Arab Emirates, we immersed ourselves in the local culture. Indulging in delicious Arabic mezze, we reveled in activities like dune-bashing in the desert and joining new friends for a holiday pub crawl. Celebrating New Year’s Eve in a villa and enjoying a dhow cruise to watch dolphins in Oman, we envisioned a future full of new opportunities—especially with the appeal of tax-free living.

A Lasting Connection

After nearly 18 years, even though I left Dubai in 2014, the city remains a significant part of my life. Frequent visits have kept my ties strong, particularly with my sister’s family still residing there. The recent conflict in the region has kept me away, highlighting how much I miss the vibrancy of Dubai. The Australian government’s travel advice may have shifted, but the memories I’ve built in this dynamic city continue to resonate.

I made the bold decision to move to the UAE shortly after the events of September 11, 2001. Many thought I was taking a risk, yet my experiences there broadened my perspective and enriched my understanding of the Middle East. Living in Dubai presented a blend of challenges and rewards that reshaped my worldview.

Despite negative perceptions surrounding labor conditions and cultural differences, I found the city’s positive aspects greatly outweigh the challenges. The safety, cultural diversity, and unparalleled culinary experiences are everyday highlights. Plus, the city offers immediate access to international travel opportunities, making it an ideal launchpad for regional exploration.

An Enriching Lifestyle

Family-friendly and bustling with activities, Dubai provides opportunities to ski, surf, and hike within one locale. The city’s nightlife and social scene are unbeatable, with a lively expat community that thrives on weekend adventures. I cherish the activities I engaged in—from skydiving over the iconic Palm Jumeirah to attending thrilling camel races and concerts.

Emirati culture shines through the generous hospitality and understanding prevalent among locals. Interactions may be fewer than in other places, but when they do happen, they often lead to warm friendships. My own experiences during Ramadan and invitations to local festivities deepened my appreciation for the rich cultural tapestry of the UAE.

Overall, the journey I’ve taken in Dubai has been transformative. The city is woven into the fabric of my identity, and its evolution mirrors my personal growth during my time there. Dubai’s allure, complexity, and opportunities will forever hold a special place in my heart.
