Toyota Building on Sheikh Zayed Road to Be Demolished by 2027
The iconic Nasser Rashid Lootah Building, a long-standing fixture on Sheikh Zayed Road, is set for demolition in 2027, drawing attention and nostalgia from tenants who are now leaving. Videos have emerged online showcasing tenants reminiscing about their time in the building, amplifying the emotional stakes as the demolition date approaches.
The Tenant Situation
Gulf News reached out to the building’s management to uncover more about the situation. A representative from the NRL Group confirmed that tenants with existing rental contracts can inhabit the building until December 2026. However, some residents are already vacating their apartments. The agent explained that those moving out have faced disconnection of their electricity services, primarily affecting residents with partitioned rooms. Gulf News has sought further clarification from local authorities regarding these electricity-related issues and the circumstances surrounding the partitioned units.
A Bittersweet Farewell
One current resident, Himanshu SK, documented his emotional farewell on Instagram. Having lived in the building for three years, SK fondly recalls his experiences, noting the area as one of the best in Downtown Dubai for affordable housing. “This building has been a significant part of my life in Dubai,” he expressed, reflecting on the memories formed in both Block A and Block B. He isn’t alone; many longtime residents have grown deeply attached to the building, sharing decades of cherished moments as the community around them transformed.
Although many residents are vacating, some businesses remain operational for the time being. A restaurant located on the building’s ground floor confirmed it would continue to serve customers, but staff indicated that most residents have already departed. Meanwhile, a minimart within the building announced plans to close within the next few days, revealing the rapid changes taking place in the structure.
A Landmark of Sheikh Zayed Road
Constructed in 1974, the Nasser Rashid Lootah Building is a landmark that has witnessed Dubai’s transformation over the decades. This 15-story residential complex played a significant role in the early skyline of Sheikh Zayed Road, standing tall at approximately 65 meters. Historically referred to as the “Toyota Building,” it displayed a neon Toyota sign for nearly 40 years before its removal in 2018; however, the familiar logo was restored in June 2022. The building has offered a variety of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, thus catering to a diverse community over the years.
As 2027 approaches, the imminent demolition marks the end of an era for the Nasser Rashid Lootah Building, a significant marker on Sheikh Zayed Road. Current tenants can still enjoy their home until December 2026, but poignant memories and stories from this landmark will continue to echo in the hearts of those who called it home.
In conclusion, the impending demolition highlights both the changes and challenges that come with urban development in a rapidly growing city like Dubai. As residents reflect on their experiences, the building stands as a testament to a time when the city was evolving, capturing countless moments that will soon be left behind.
