AirBorneo to Revolutionize S’wak’s Economy Like Emirates Did for Dubai
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has expressed optimism that AirBorneo will significantly contribute to the growth of Sarawak’s tourism and overall economy. He draws parallels between AirBorneo’s potential impact and the roles that Emirates and Singapore Airlines have played in bolstering the economies of Dubai and Singapore.
Investment Beyond Financial Returns
Abang Johari emphasized that the Sarawak government’s backing of this state-owned airline should be considered through a comprehensive economic lens rather than focusing solely on direct financial gains. He believes the airline will create a ripple effect across various sectors, benefiting not just the airline itself, but also hotels, restaurants, and local businesses. “The spillover is not just for the airline. Hotels will benefit, restaurants will benefit, people will spend, and all sectors of the economy will enjoy the gains,” he stated during his speech at the Sarawak Energy Vendor Excellence Awards on July 8.
The Premier pointed out that Sarawak’s geographical location on Borneo makes air connectivity crucial for its socio-economic development. “We rely on air bridges, air connectivity. For us in Borneo, we have to invest,” he said, reinforcing the idea that aviation is essential for economic growth in the region. He also mentioned that AirBorneo will maintain consistent pricing on its Kuching-Kuala Lumpur route at RM375 throughout the year, even during festive seasons—when airfares typically skyrocket. This is intended to stabilize overall airfare prices in the market.
Boosting Tourism and Local Business
Abang Johari argued that a narrow focus on AirBorneo’s commercial returns would fail to acknowledge the wider benefits of enhanced connectivity. Improved air travel will likely attract more visitors to Sarawak, thereby supporting local enterprises and fortifying the tourism sector. He draws attention to successful examples from around the world, specifically noting how Dubai has thrived due to Emirates and Singapore’s growth stemming from Singapore Airlines. “Dubai developed because of Emirates. The same goes for Singapore,” he explained.
Through this approach, Sarawak aims to replicate similar successes by investing in aviation infrastructure, contributing to long-term economic viability. By understanding the foundational role a high-quality national airline plays in economic development, the Sarawak government is strategically positioning itself for future opportunities.
In summary, the investment in AirBorneo represents more than just the establishment of a new airline; it symbolizes a vital step toward enhancing air connectivity and economic growth in Sarawak. With the intention of stabilizing airfares and boosting tourism, the government is fostering an environment conducive to local business success and broader economic resilience. The Premier’s vision underscores the interconnectedness of transportation, tourism, and economic development, laying a promising foundation for Sarawak’s future.
