Dubai Expo to Highlight Transformative AI Innovations for Everyone
An exciting exhibition focused on cutting-edge technology that enhances accessibility and independent living for people of determination (PoD) is set to take place in Dubai this October. The eighth edition of the AccessAbilities Expo will occur from October 19 to 21 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, featuring 300 international exhibitors from over 50 countries.
Revolutionary Assistive Technologies
At the heart of this event will be a range of artificial intelligence-powered assistive technologies. Recent advancements in this field have seen a remarkable surge, offering innovative solutions that cater specifically to individual needs. Attendees can expect to find state-of-the-art gadgets, including AI-enhanced smart glasses equipped with cameras to provide real-time descriptions of surroundings for individuals with visual impairments. Additional featured technologies include continuous speech recognition systems tailored for those with speech disorders and advanced autonomous mobility solutions incorporating intelligent prosthetic limbs.
In a move toward enhancing public safety, the Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Service (DCAS) has recently revealed a comprehensive database that will gather medical histories and vital information pertaining to PoDs throughout the emirate. Similarly, the Dubai Municipality has introduced the DB Safe app, designed to send audio alerts to occupants in the event of an emergency evacuation, such as during a tremor.
Addressing Accessibility Challenges
Despite the tremendous strides made in technological innovations, access to assistive technology remains an urgent issue. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that nearly 90 percent of PoDs globally lack access to crucial assistive tools, primarily due to prohibitive costs and limited availability. The Global Report on Assistive Technology further underscores this discrepancy, revealing that only three percent of individuals who need devices like smart wheelchairs, hearing aids, or advanced prosthetic limbs are currently able to benefit from these essential technologies.
“Assistive technologies empower People of Determination to face life’s challenges with greater confidence and independence,” stated Ghassan Suleiman, CEO of Nadd Al Shiba PR & Event Management, the event’s organizer. He emphasized that although digital advancements are rapidly evolving, challenges regarding the availability and adoption of these technologies persist in various regions.
Significance of the AccessAbilities Expo
This year’s exhibition, held under the esteemed patronage of Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, is recognized as the largest specialized event for PoD in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia (MENASA) region. Anticipation is high, with expectations of welcoming over 18,000 visitors from more than 70 countries.
The Expo serves as a vital platform for collaboration among government entities, innovators, healthcare providers, educational institutions, and the private sector. By fostering an environment of knowledge sharing, it highlights the latest solutions and innovation while facilitating strategic partnerships. Suleiman mentioned that initiatives like the AccessAbilities Expo are crucial in bolstering the UAE’s commitment to empowering PoDs and ensuring their full participation in society.
Moreover, the global assistive technology market is projected to expand from an estimated US$30.5 billion in 2026 to around US$65.2 billion by 2034, with the Middle East region expected to account for nearly US$5 billion of this growth. This increase illustrates a burgeoning demand for these life-changing technologies and their profound impact on improving quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
