In 2017, Camilla Rhuda made a life-changing decision to leave her hometown of Bury in the UK for the vibrant city of Dubai. Camilla is among those who have capitalized on the opportunities available in Dubai: “I wanted to travel and see the world, and I knew Dubai could provide that experience.”

After earning her degree in media and performing arts, Camilla pivoted toward teaching, which ultimately led her to Dubai. “I secured a PGCE and, after just four months of teaching in the UK, I landed a teaching position in Dubai. That was the beginning of my new life.”

Since her arrival in Dubai, Camilla has explored various roles, from teaching to becoming a governess for an affluent family. These experiences have provided her with valuable insights into the city, once a fishing village, that has transformed into a global hub of commerce and culture. Living in Dubai, she enjoys a tax-free lifestyle, allowing her to save significantly and enhance her financial independence. Camilla explains, “The absence of personal income tax makes it easier to save and gives me more freedom to travel.”

Within months, she also met her husband Jim, a DJ originally from the United States, reinforcing her belief that Dubai is a cultural melting pot. The richness of the community, with its diverse mix of over 200 nationalities, has been a source of comfort for her, particularly given her multicultural background. “It’s uplifting to be in an environment where everyone comes together for shared experiences,” she notes.

Adapting to the local culture often involves navigating a strict legal framework, particularly concerning personal expressions in online reviews. “You can’t criticize local businesses publicly, as that can lead to legal repercussions,” she explains, reflecting on the nuances of living in a different country.

The desert climate poses additional challenges. “The heat is something that took getting used to,” she confesses. Temperatures soaring above 40°C in summer can be tough, yet air conditioning makes it manageable. Her visits back home prompt her to reflect on the accessibility of amenities in the UK, such as casual grocery runs and local outings.
