Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is revolutionizing road safety and traffic efficiency through its cutting-edge Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) system. This advanced technology not only enhances mobility across the emirate but also plays a vital role in promoting safer driving conditions.

Significant Reductions in Travel Times

The implementation of DMS boards has led to remarkable outcomes, with travel times reduced by up to 20% on key roadways. These electronic boards provide real-time alerts about various road conditions, including accidents, traffic congestion, and adverse weather. By offering timely information, the RTA is not only helping drivers navigate smoother journeys but also prioritizing overall road safety.

Currently, there are 112 DMS strategically placed throughout Dubai’s main road network. These signs are seamlessly integrated with the iTraffic system at the Intelligent Traffic Systems Center, facilitating continuous monitoring of traffic conditions and quick responses to unforeseen disruptions. This infrastructure supports the RTA’s objective of creating a user-friendly transportation environment for both residents and visitors.

Salah Al Marzouqi, director of the Intelligent Traffic Systems area at RTA, emphasized the importance of DMS. He explained that the system significantly boosts road safety by delivering sequential messages that adjust to the location of incidents. For instance, alerts start appearing 2 kilometers before an accident site, creating advance notification zones that mitigate the chance of further collisions.

Effective Communication with Road Users

DMS have become essential tools for real-time communication with drivers. They broadcast vital alerts regarding traffic congestion, accidents, and breakdowns while also managing traffic diversions during major events. Furthermore, they contribute to road safety awareness campaigns. A dedicated set of 22 signs provides automatic travel time information to popular destinations, such as Dubai International Airport and Dubai Marina, thus empowering drivers to make more informed routing decisions.

In the first half of 2025 alone, the DMS disseminated a total of 17,819 messages, the majority of which were related to traffic incidents. This extensive use of DMS highlights how integral this system is to responding effectively to a range of traffic scenarios, thereby reinforcing public safety.

RTA underscores that the DMS framework is augmented by various field sensors, including those measuring travel times, vehicle speeds, and weather conditions. By leveraging artificial intelligence, the central iTraffic system analyzes this complex data in real time and executes immediate response plans, ensuring swift action during emergencies like heavy rain or fog.
