In a significant development for education in Dubai, Queen Elizabeth’s School, a highly regarded institution from the UK, has opened its doors to over 500 students and staff. This marks the school’s first international branch in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Known as QE, it boasts a rich heritage dating back to its founding in 1573 as a grammar school in Barnet, north London. Designed to replicate the academic excellence it is famous for in the UK, the school is set to provide an enriching educational experience for its students.
Welcome to QE Dubai
Located in the dynamic Dubai Sports City, the newly established branch operates from a significantly revamped building. With a capacity for 2,500 students, the school aims to expand gradually over the next several years, offering a British curriculum to those in preschool up to Year 8. The annual tuition fees range from AED 93,000 to AED 136,604, reflecting its premium position in the educational market. Founding principal, Dan Clark, who has been instrumental in assembling a dedicated teaching staff since arriving in February, expressed enthusiasm about the school’s long-awaited opening, emphasizing the considerable effort that has gone into the project.
A Commitment to Excellence
Mr. Clark outlined three core priorities for QE Dubai: fostering a culture of scholarship, instilling a strong sense of belonging among students, and maintaining small class sizes to ensure that each child is genuinely known and supported. Foundation Stage classes are capped at just 16 students, with a maximum of 20 in any class throughout the school. This student-teacher ratio allows for personalized attention, with dedicated teaching assistants available for every class up to Year 6. Importantly, many of the faculty members bring significant experience from previous school openings, enhancing the overall educational quality.
The school’s academic philosophy centers on the idea of students being “comfortably stuck,” allowing them to tackle challenging material without becoming overwhelmed—an approach aligned with the practices of its esteemed predecessor in Barnet. Commitment to a rigorous academic environment is further illustrated by families drawn to the school’s unapologetic focus on excellence.
A Growing Community
The opening day welcomed a diverse group of students, all part of the historic first intake that will shape the school’s future. For many families, this inaugural cohort represents a unique opportunity to influence the school’s development alongside its staff. Ezra, a Year 8 student who eagerly anticipated his first day, became a passionate advocate for the school after engaging with its promotional materials and meeting the educators.
School enrollment is projected to increase, with plans for the first Year 8 cohort to eventually transition into the sixth form, setting the stage for a legacy of academic achievement. Families like that of Nimra Sattar, who enrolled four of her sons, express enthusiasm about the close-knit community reminiscent of their experiences back home.
Embracing the Future of Education
Beyond the traditional curriculum, QE Dubai is establishing valuable partnerships that enhance its educational offerings. Collaborations with local sports facilities and the Royal Northern College of Music introduce enhanced extracurricular options for students, while a health and wellness coordinator from King’s College Hospital Dubai will focus on comprehensive wellness programs.
The emergence of QE Dubai reflects a broader trend of increasing demand for British curriculum schools in the UAE, catering not just to expatriates but also to a growing number of Emirati families seeking the familiar structure and global recognition that this system offers. With British education long regarded as a “gold standard,” it is no surprise that QE Dubai is positioned to make a significant impact on the UAE’s educational landscape, targeting academic excellence while nurturing well-rounded students ready for the global stage.
