Uber Technologies has launched Baidu’s Apollo Go driverless service within its Dubai network, aiming to roll out numerous autonomous vehicles throughout the emirate. This new initiative underscores Uber’s commitment to broadening its reach in the realm of autonomous mobility.
Initial Launch Locations and Vehicle Model
The Apollo Go service will initially operate in specific districts of Dubai, particularly the Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim areas. This service utilizes Baidu’s latest sixth-generation RT6 robotaxi, known for its advanced autonomous capabilities. Uber has outlined plans for future expansion beyond these initial locations, emphasizing its ambition to integrate cutting-edge transportation solutions across the city.
Integration with Uber’s Existing Platforms
Riders can access the Apollo Go service by selecting an option within the Uber app that matches them to a driverless vehicle, either through UberX or Uber Comfort. Alternatively, users can opt for an “autonomous” option specifically designed for this service. Sarfraz Maredia, Uber’s head of autonomous mobility and delivery, highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating that it represents a significant progression in their global strategic vision for autonomous transportation.
Expanding Autonomous Services in the UAE
In addition to the new driverless service in Dubai, Uber has already established a similar autonomous project in Abu Dhabi, partnering with WeRide. This previous effort marked the company’s inaugural foray into international driverless services, showcasing Uber’s strategic expansion in the Middle East. Moreover, Baidu has remained active in the UAE’s autonomous landscape by collaborating with local companies and receiving permits to test fully autonomous vehicles devoid of safety drivers.
