Buro Happold and SOUR partner with Dubai Geospatial Accelerator

Buro Happold and SOUR have recently been chosen to take part in the innovative Geospatial Accelerator, established by the DIFC Innovation Hub in partnership with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC). This initiative aims to fast-track the use of space and Earth observation technologies, focusing on real-world applications.

Transforming Earth Observation with AI

The Geospatial Accelerator is the inaugural program under the Space for Earth Labs platform. It unites leading international SpaceTech firms with various organizations across the UAE to create proof-of-concept projects. These projects will demonstrate how satellite data, combined with artificial intelligence (AI), can tackle intricate operational and societal issues. Following a rigorous selection process, which involved over 70 applications from 24 different nations, 11 innovative SpaceTech companies were selected to collaborate with five public and private sector organizations in the UAE, including Buro Happold.

Jack Rose, co-lead of the geospatial accelerator at Buro Happold, emphasizes the transformative potential of AI and real-time Earth observation in understanding the built environment. He believes these technologies will help integrate human needs with nature-focused designs for more resilient, future-ready communities.

Driving Sustainable Development with Advanced Data Analytics

Buro Happold’s experts are teaming up with Latitudo40 and SparkGeo to investigate how Earth observation data and AI can improve decision-making in both the built and natural environments. This collaboration underlines Buro Happold’s dedication to utilizing emerging technologies to boost understanding, increase resilience, and support sustainable outcomes for various clients and communities.

The capacity to access and analyze large volumes of Earth observation data opens up new avenues for those involved in infrastructure, development, and urban planning. Whether it involves monitoring environmental conditions, assessing climate risks, or guiding infrastructure development, geospatial technologies can yield invaluable insights throughout a project’s lifecycle. The Geospatial Accelerator guides multidisciplinary teams in identifying practical and scalable applications of these capabilities, ultimately providing enhanced value within the built environment sector.

Pioneering Climate Predictions with Latitudo40

Latitudo40 is using advanced technology to provide early warnings for extreme climate events. Their proof of concept leverages satellite data and proprietary AI algorithms to pinpoint regions at risk for severe weather. CEO Gaetano Volpe asserts that this technology lays the foundation for effective early warning systems that can safeguard communities and territories.

By harnessing extensive Earth observation data, this initiative aims to create localized early warning notifications for climate-related disasters, adaptable to any location worldwide. This advanced system seeks to deliver vital information that can be comprehended and acted upon by the communities it serves, proving that timely insights can enhance safety and well-being.

Enhancing Coastal Resilience with SparkGeo

In collaboration with SparkGeo, Buro Happold is exploring how coastal resilience impacts habitat changes through Earth observation data and AI. This initiative looks to offer predictive insights into future shoreline and habitat alterations along the UAE’s coastline.

Will Cadell, CEO of SparkGeo, points out that much of coastal planning relies on outdated data. This project aims to bridge the gap by providing forward-looking signals rather than historical accounts. The goal is to empower planners and developers by clarifying how coastal ecosystems might respond to climate-driven changes, ultimately supporting resilient development efforts and nature-based adaptation strategies.

As Dubai strives to become a global hub for the intersection of space technology and artificial intelligence, initiatives like the Geospatial Accelerator play a crucial role. By empowering innovators and facilitating collaboration between public and private sectors, the program serves to unlock the potential of space-derived data, fostering innovation across the built environment.

Callum Foster, a geospatial analysis expert from Buro Happold, encapsulates this vision, noting how AI can enhance the understanding of Earth observation data, translating it into meaningful insights that protect our natural environment.
