The Art of Exaggeration

For Saeed, caricature is all about the funny side of a person’s features. Traditional portraiture often feels too serious and restrained for his taste. “I find that portraits lack the playful essence I want to convey,” he explains. By focusing on humor, Saeed aims to uplift people’s spirits through his drawings.

However, behind every quick sketch lies a thorough examination of his subject. Saeed meticulously studies individual characteristics to identify what aspect to emphasize. “If someone is bald, I might start with the scalp. For a pronounced nose, that takes precedence,” he notes. Sometimes, unique dental features even become the foundation of a caricature. While the eyes are a common starting point, Saeed prefers to kick off his drawings from the most striking feature to ensure that the final product remains both lively and recognizable.

His artistic range is quite impressive, as Saeed doesn’t confine himself to a single style. “I adopt various styles depending on the person in front of me,” he shares, noting that reading the person’s demeanor is vital. Some clients might appreciate a more flattering caricature, while others are ecstatic about exaggerated representations. His preferred choice? The extreme caricature. These sketches enthrall audiences, eliciting laughter and eager anticipation about just how far he’ll stretch the limits of exaggeration.

A Leap from Corporate to Creative

Saeed’s path to success wasn’t always straightforward. Upon arriving in Dubai in 2004, he initially sought work as a graphic designer and 3D visualizer in the events industry. He faced challenges, including living in cramped conditions with multiple roommates. Nonetheless, Saeed saw Dubai as an opportunity to test his limits and showcase his talents. “This city offers a chance to prove yourself,” he asserts.

The pivotal moment came when he volunteered to fill in as a caricature artist at an event. His boss was taken aback, asking him to demonstrate his skills on the spot. Saeed quickly sketched his boss, impressing him and effectively landing the gig. This initial experience led him to balance live caricature work alongside his corporate role for a year. Eventually, with encouragement from his boss, he made the bold decision to leave his nine-to-five job behind, pursuing his passion full-time. “I’ve turned my childhood hobby into my career,” he reflects, grateful for the journey.

The Zombie Obsession

Interestingly, not all of Saeed’s artistic inclinations have been lighthearted. At one point, he immersed himself in drawing zombies, exploring horror-related imagery and effects. “I became so engrossed that it started influencing my dreams—nightmares, to be precise,” he recalls. He mastered techniques to depict grotesque facial features and unsettling scenarios.

However, he soon realized that while his passion for zombie illustrations was strong, it was not commercially viable. “I adore drawing zombies, but it’s not something that sells,” he admits. Thus, he returned his focus to caricatures, skillfully transforming ordinary faces into amusing keepsakes within mere minutes.
