From Dream to Reality

On January 11, 2025, during his wedding speech, Mills’ husband made a heartfelt commitment to relocate to Dubai by 2027. Fast forward a year, and the couple is enjoying their first month as residents of the UAE. Mills, a 29-year-old British social media and marketing strategist, shared, “He believed that if we put it out into the universe, we could make it happen.”

The aspirations to move to Dubai had been brewing for quite some time. Mills explained that her husband frequently traveled to the UAE due to family ties in Abu Dhabi, instilling in him a long-held dream of experiencing life there. Although Mills only visited Dubai in 2024, she immediately recognized the city’s immense possibilities: “This city offers the lifestyle, business opportunities, and ambition I had been seeking for the past five years.”

Dreaming Big Beyond Scotland

Raised on the outskirts of Edinburgh, Mills had never lived outside her native Scotland. Yet, as the founder of her own social media marketing consultancy, Rose&Thistle Marketing Services, she felt her aspirations stretched far beyond her surroundings. “I was trying to grow a business from a place that didn’t match my ambitions,” she confessed. In November 2024, Mills decided to explore whether Dubai could serve as a new home and business hub.

During her solo trip to the city, she focused on evaluating whether it could feel like home rather than just a vacation spot. Mills recalled attending a networking event at Pier 7, where she met a diverse group of professionals from around the globe. “I realized how supportive and collaborative the community here is,” she noted, adding that this atmosphere played a pivotal role in her decision to move.

Fast-Tracking Their Future in Dubai

Seven months after her husband’s initial declaration, Mills took decisive steps toward making Dubai their reality. The couple expedited their plans to move in 2026, recognizing that renewing their mortgage in the UK would only tie them down. “Instead of committing for another 5-10 years, we saw it as the perfect opportunity to take action,” she explained. Seeking guidance from an accountancy firm, they commenced their transition.

Both entrepreneurs tackled securing their business licenses and visas. Mills described the process as remarkably efficient: “Within a week, we had our business set up and began the visa application process!” Although regional tensions introduced some delays, their resolve remained strong.

After only a month of settling into their new life, Mills expressed enthusiasm for the lifestyle changes they’ve experienced. The couple marveled at the city’s efficiency and noted that their living expenses were comparable to those in the UK, contrary to their expectations. “We’re leading healthier, more motivated lives, even in the height of summer,” she shared.

Mills is already seeing encouraging results for her business endeavors since arriving in Dubai. “I’ve received numerous business inquiries and have met amazing individuals at various events and community gatherings,” she explained. The move has also enabled her to forge connections with admired female colleagues, taking their relationships from online interactions to meaningful real-world partnerships.

Reflecting on her journey thus far, Mills feels invigorated by the opportunities and connections available in Dubai. “This city aligns perfectly with the person I aspire to become,” she affirmed.
