Experience the City Through Local Eyes
Dubai is not just where I live; it’s woven into the fabric of my professional life, creating a unique bond that begins with each new dawn. Mornings in my household brim with the energy of my three children as we rush to get ready for the day: filling backpacks, making breakfast, and engaging in lively morning conversations. Before the whirlwind of work begins, I take a moment to enjoy a peaceful coffee at a nearby café—my brief ritual to gather my thoughts before immersing myself in the demands of running a business.
A Sustainable Business Inspired by Nature
I co-founded Palmade with my husband, Yousuf Caires, focusing on crafting fully compostable cutlery and tableware from the discarded leaves of date palm trees—material that was previously overlooked as waste. We launched during Expo 2020 Dubai, a time that felt serendipitous as global discussions on sustainability converged in a city renowned for its innovative spirit.
Our journey began almost serendipitously. During a long exploration of materials, Yousuf and I redirected our gaze toward the countless date palm fronds trimmed annually across the UAE. These palms, deeply rooted in the landscape and cultural identity of Dubai, had become so commonplace that people stopped seeing their value. We recognized the strength and abundance of this resource that had been neglected.
Embracing My Roots Through Business
Having grown up in Dubai, I have always shared my space with date palms—spotted in parks, along beaches, and throughout city drives. It wasn’t until we embarked on building Palmade that I understood how closely my identity was linked to these trees. Creating a business centered around something so familiar feels less like a conventional career move and more like a heartfelt dialogue with my roots.
However, the road to transforming an eco-friendly concept into a thriving business hasn’t been seamless. Managing both a family and a company demands a certain level of transparency with ourselves. Yousuf and I have learned to navigate these challenges together, supporting each other as needed in both our professional and personal lives.
Finding Balance Amidst the Hustle
On days when the demands of work feel overwhelming, a trip to the beach offers a much-needed respite. I find solace near the ocean; nothing compares to the calming sound of the waves that help me pause and regain focus. Kite Beach, with its blend of energy and relaxation, is my go-to spot—perfect for long walks by the shore, followed by coffee or lunch at charming cafes like SKM’D or Common Grounds.
The ocean not only grants me peace but also instills a sense of perspective and humility. It serves as a reminder of nature’s vastness and power, helping to silence the chaos of daily life. The beach is one of the few places I can genuinely disconnect, reflect, and reconnect with myself.
Dubai can be both a bustling city of ambition and a serene landscape of tranquility. It offers momentum for those seeking growth while providing calmer spots like the Al Fahidi neighborhood and the old creek to savor moments of leisure. Both facets of this city enrich my experience, and I find value in each.
A Day in Dubai: Discovering Local Treasures
If I had just 24 hours to showcase the city, I would start at home, emphasizing the unmatched hospitality of Dubai. From Old Dubai’s historic charm to sunset views over the desert, this area is where the city’s true essence lies. Lunch at local favorites like Bait Maryam or Three by Eva, paired with a stop at Mercato Shopping Mall for groceries and shopping, rounds off the experience.
Ultimately, Dubai stands as a remarkable tapestry of tradition and innovation—a city where serene desert safaris mingle with vibrant beaches and diverse culinary adventures. Visitors leave with stories that echo the unique blend of heritage and modernity found only in this extraordinary destination.
