Dubai Finishes Oud Maitha Road and Al Asayel Project
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has successfully completed the Oud Maitha Road and Al Asayel Street Development Project, according to reports from TradeArabia News Service. This project is a key component in enhancing the connectivity within Dubai’s road network, improving the links between major traffic routes, and addressing the rapid urbanization and population growth in surrounding areas.
Project Overview and Benefits
The comprehensive development involved significant improvements at four major intersections and the construction of four bridges and two tunnels, totaling 4,300 meters in length and extending an additional 14 kilometers of roadway. These enhancements are set to facilitate smoother traffic flow, increase road capacity, and significantly reduce travel times. The upgrades will benefit several key districts, including Zaabeel, Al Jaddaf, Oud Maitha, and Umm Hurair, as well as vital amenities such as Latifa Hospital and Al Wasl Club. By 2030, the projected population of these areas is expected to exceed 420,000.
Insights from RTA Leadership
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the RTA’s Executive Directors Board, emphasized that the project’s completion is a crucial segment of Dubai’s broader strategy for enhancing its transportation infrastructure. He highlighted that this initiative is designed to cater to projected increases in both population and traffic, ultimately fostering improved mobility and a higher quality of life for residents and visitors alike. According to Al Tayer, the project plays a pivotal role in strengthening connections among numerous residential areas, vital service facilities, and main traffic routes, thereby enhancing intersection performance and traffic safety.
Traffic Capacity and Efficiency Improvements
Al Tayer pointed out that the enhancements will greatly elevate Oud Maitha Street’s capacity, increasing it from 10,400 to 15,600 vehicles per hour—a substantial 50% increase. Additionally, the travel time on this route is expected to decrease from 20 minutes to just five minutes, delivering a remarkable time saving of 75%. Such improvements will significantly bolster traffic movement and connectivity between Oud Maitha Road and Al Asayel Street, as well as the entire surrounding road network.
Transformations at Key Intersections
The project notably upgraded four critical intersections. At the Oud Maitha Road and Sheikh Rashid Road junction, a new lane was added to the left-turn ramp for vehicles transferring from Oud Maitha Road onto Sheikh Rashid Road towards Al Garhoud Bridge, thereby increasing capacity to 1,800 vehicles per hour. Furthermore, enhancements to the service road on Sheikh Rashid Road were made to mitigate existing traffic issues and enhance user safety. The number of right-turn lanes leading from Sheikh Rashid Road toward Oud Maitha Road for access to Dubai-Al Ain Road was increased from two to three, boosting capacity to 4,000 vehicles per hour.
Overall, the successful completion of the Oud Maitha and Al Asayel projects positions Dubai to more effectively meet the demands of its growing population while enhancing mobility for all road users. This initiative not only underscores the RTA’s commitment to sustainable development but also reflects its forward-thinking approach in planning for the city’s future expansion.
