Dubai Chambers and Ministry Host Forum on Family Business Sustainability
Dubai recently hosted a forum focused on enhancing the sustainability of family businesses, a vital segment of the UAE’s economy. Co-organized by Dubai Chambers, the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, and the Indian Business and Professional Council, the event aimed to address governance and adopt best practices for family enterprises, particularly among the Indian community in Dubai.
Importance of Family Businesses in the UAE
Family enterprises are foundational to the UAE’s economic framework, contributing significantly to GDP and employment. H.E. Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, the Minister of Economy and Tourism, emphasized their critical role in propelling the national economy. Family businesses account for approximately 60% of the country’s GDP and employ around 80% of the workforce, making them a key pillar in economic diversification. These businesses are involved in crucial sectors such as hospitality, retail, real estate, and construction, and their significance cannot be understated.
The recently enacted Federal Decree Law No. (37) of 2022 on Family Businesses serves as a critical legislative pillar aimed at enhancing the operational flexibility of family enterprises. This law provides a regulatory framework designed to foster growth and facilitate adaptability to economic fluctuations. The establishment of the Unified Family Business Registry further supports this initiative by offering essential services to family companies, from registration to the management of family charters, ultimately creating a conducive environment for business continuity and expansion.
Unified Family Business Registry
The launch of the Unified Family Business Registry is a game-changer for family businesses in the UAE. This comprehensive federal platform enables family firms to register their operations officially, obtain registration certificates, and manage essential legal documents. H.E. Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri encouraged family businesses to take advantage of this platform to fully utilize the benefits available, ensuring they remain competitive in an increasingly global marketplace.
By registering, family enterprises can tap into a wealth of opportunities across more than 2,000 economic activities. This system is designed to simplify processes and provide essential services that bolster the operational framework of family businesses, thus ensuring their viability and growth potential for future generations.
Future Prospects for Family Enterprises
H.E. Mohammad Ali Rashed Lootah, President and CEO of Dubai Chambers, outlined the long-standing legacy of family businesses in Dubai built on trust and commercial acumen. The aim is to transition these businesses to more sophisticated institutional models. Lootah reaffirmed the commitment to equip family enterprises with governance best practices, ensuring their sustenance across generations.
The forum attracted 87 participants from the Indian business community, concentrating on regulatory frameworks for governance and leadership succession. Topics discussed included innovative strategies for enhancing operational performance and increasing the competitiveness of family businesses, both locally and internationally.
In line with ongoing efforts to empower family enterprises, the Dubai Centre for Family Businesses is set to introduce specialized advisory services aimed at assessing current business situations, developing family charters, and planning family offices. This initiative is expected to connect family businesses with trusted advisors, thus fostering a healthier, more competitive business ecosystem in Dubai.
Ultimately, the forum was a crucial step in promoting sustainable practices within family businesses, ensuring they remain at the forefront of the UAE’s economic landscape.
