ENOC and Dubai Municipality Collaborate to Enhance Cooking Oil Recycling
In a significant move towards sustainability, Dubai Municipality and ENOC Group have forged a partnership aimed at converting used cooking oil into biodiesel. This collaboration not only seeks to enhance resource efficiency but also aligns with Dubai’s vision for a circular economy. By establishing a systematic approach to collect and repurpose culinary waste materials, both organizations aim to contribute substantially to cleaner energy solutions.
Transforming Waste into Biodiesel
The newly signed agreement entre ENOC and Dubai Municipality focuses on developing an efficient collection system for used cooking oil from various sources, including restaurants, households, and businesses throughout Dubai. This initiative will channel the collected oil to ENOC’s biodiesel production facility located in Jebel Ali. The cooperation ensures that Dubai Municipality will provide the necessary coordination and oversight to prevent improper disposal, while ENOC leverages its fuel production expertise.
By integrating waste management practices with biodiesel production, the partnership emphasizes the importance of sustainable energy resources. Engaging in the recycling of culinary waste not only helps to manage waste responsibly but also contributes to the production of alternative fuels, thereby driving Dubai closer to its sustainability goals.
Supporting Sustainable Practices
The partnership aligns with the UAE Circular Economy Policy 2031, aiming to foster a more resource-efficient environment. ENOC’s Deputy Managing Director, Ali Khalid bin Zayed Al Falasi, emphasized the importance of alternative fuels in meeting the UAE’s future energy demands and stated that transforming waste into fuel is vital for enhancing local production capabilities. This collaborative effort underscores ENOC’s commitment to developing energy solutions that support environmental sustainability and economic growth.
Eng. Adel Mohammed Al Marzouqi, CEO of the Waste and Sewerage Agency at Dubai Municipality, added that this initiative represents a vital step in promoting integrated waste management and advancing circular economy practices. By converting waste into valuable resources, both organizations strive to maximize resource recovery while minimizing waste, thereby fostering long-term sustainability.
A Local Pathway to Cleaner Energy
The proposed collection system aims to establish a direct link between the recovery of used cooking oil across Dubai and the biodiesel production capabilities at ENOC’s Jebel Ali plant. This localized approach will streamline the conversion of waste into a functional energy resource, demonstrating the potential for innovative solutions to aid in the development of eco-friendly initiatives.
Since 2017, ENOC has been a pioneer in introducing biodiesel to the UAE market and has continually expanded its offerings to encompass transport, logistics, and construction sectors. By utilizing local resources to create alternative energy, ENOC is not only supporting the shift to cleaner fuels but is also illustrating how effective waste management can positively impact the environment.
Through their presence at events like WETEX 2026, ENOC aims to showcase its commitment to sustainable energy solutions, enhancing engagement with government entities and industry partners. The collaboration represents a comprehensive effort to promote cleaner energy use while addressing environmental concerns and advancing Dubai’s clean energy transition.
