From Home Business to Global Orders: Mumtaz Begum’s Success

In just two years, Mohammed Mumtaz Begum from Tallamudi village in Andhra Pradesh transformed a simple idea into a thriving vermicelli business. With a small bank loan and a lot of determination, she launched her venture, which now reaches customers locally and internationally. This inspiring story highlights how entrepreneurial spirit can create jobs and foster community growth.

Launching the Vermicelli Business

Mumtaz’s journey began when she purchased a packet of vermicelli in Vijayawada, leading her to ponder the possibility of manufacturing it herself. Driven by ambition, she secured a ₹2 lakh bank loan, enabling her to invest in a specialized vermicelli-making machine. Initially operating out of her home, she quickly learned the ins and outs of production—from preparation and drying to packaging. The business utilizes high-quality wheat flour and purified water, with the machine capable of producing approximately 15 kg of vermicelli per batch. As Ramadan approaches, demand surges for her product, as it’s a staple ingredient in festive recipes. Notably, one of her largest orders, worth ₹1 lakh, came from local MLA Chintamaneni Prabhakar during this peak period.

Expanding the Market and Creating Jobs

Mumtaz’s success has also contributed to local employment. Her business currently employs at least seven individuals, with extra workers brought on during busier seasons. By paying around ₹500 a day, she provides essential income to her employees. Additionally, her family’s involvement in the business underscores its community focus—her husband and son assist with operations, while her elder son works abroad in the air-conditioning sector. Impressively, Mumtaz also rents out her vermicelli-making machine to aspiring entrepreneurs, allowing them to enter the market without a significant initial investment.

Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Mumtaz is planning to relocate her business from Tallamudi to Hanuman Junction, aiming to enhance logistical efficiency and market access. This move will facilitate the processing of larger orders and improve customer outreach. She is actively seeking government support to promote her products at various sales venues. By advocating for opportunities for Self-Help Groups, she hopes to empower other entrepreneurs to participate in exhibitions and fairs, amplifying their market visibility.

Overall, Mumtaz Begum’s remarkable journey is not just about personal success; it reflects a broader narrative about entrepreneurship fueling local economies. As she continues to expand her vermicelli business and create jobs, her story serves as an inspiration for those looking to innovate and contribute to their communities.
