Ningxia’s Smart Greenhouses Gain Traction in Arab Markets
The advancement of smart photovoltaic greenhouse technology in Northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region is making waves across Arab nations, particularly in the UAE, Oman, Egypt, and Qatar. This innovation, originally tailored for the region’s arid climate, is evolving into crucial instruments for agricultural collaboration on an international scale.
From Local Innovation to Global Export
Ningxia’s success in exporting greenhouse technology is a testament to its industrial transformation, shaped over the past three decades by partnerships with Fujian Province. Once a beneficiary of technological and financial assistance, Ningxia has shifted gears, now sharing its expertise with Arab countries. During a recent visit to Liuquan Township in Hongsipu district, the significance of this evolution became apparent. The 2013 China-Arab States Expo in Yinchuan showcased Ningxia Wozhiyuan Technology Co.’s contributions, captivating various Arab nations. By 2014, the company was invited to Dubai to test their technology against international competitors, showcasing an ambitious aim to cultivate crops in desert conditions.
Sun Zhaojun, the president of Wozhiyuan Technology Co., recalls the skepticism surrounding the possibility of growing watermelons in Dubai’s extreme June heat. While other global teams faced failures, Wozhiyuan’s innovative methods yielded success. This remarkable achievement earned the company recognition from Dubai, leading to a technology transfer agreement a year later, with adoption spreading across multiple countries.
Building Trust Through Performance
Despite the initial challenges, forming trusting relationships with overseas partners has proven essential for Wozhiyuan. Sun reflected on his experience conducting trials in Oman, where local collaborators initially doubted the effectiveness of their underground drip irrigation technology. It took two years of data-driven validation to gain their confidence, illustrating that establishing reliability often requires patience and persistence. After securing their trust, word of mouth became a powerful marketing tool, leading to larger contracts.
In 2022, Wozhiyuan’s technology played a pivotal role in cultivating high-quality turf for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, minimizing water loss through precision irrigation methods. This successful venture brought in over $1.2 billion in orders. While there were doubts about fulfilling such extensive contracts at the outset, Sun highlighted that Chinese agricultural solutions, known for their competitive cost-effectiveness, were a decisive factor compared to alternatives from countries like Israel and the United States.
Innovative Solutions for Water Scarcity
Ningxia’s wealth of experience in addressing water scarcity is particularly relevant for many arid Arab nations. Its cutting-edge wind-solar hybrid irrigation technology integrates renewable energy with intelligent Internet of Things (IoT) controls. This blend has been deployed in countries like Oman, Egypt, and the UAE, receiving commendations for its reliability. Presently, Wozhiyuan is partnering with a Saudi entity to establish a five-year initiative aimed at developing a substantial photovoltaic smart agricultural park along with various solar-powered agricultural projects.
Ningxia’s journey has transformed it from a once-struggling region to a hub of innovation and collaboration, fostering relationships through a robust cooperation model with Fujian. This evolving partnership has grown beyond initial objectives of poverty alleviation, now focusing on sustainable development in areas like new energy technologies and agricultural advancements.
The union leverages the strengths of both regions; Fujian provides technological insights while Ningxia applies this knowledge locally and internationally. This dynamic illustrates the potential for cooperation beyond borders as Ningxia’s firms extend their technological offerings to agricultural sectors in Central Asia and the Middle East, addressing pressing challenges like climate change and resource management. By transforming challenges into opportunities, Ningxia has not only improved its own economic standing but has also emerged as a key player in global agricultural technology.
