Group AMANA to Launch IER MRO Industries’ Initial Operational Phase in Dubai
IER MRO Begins Construction on Advanced Aviation Maintenance Facility
IER MRO Industries has officially commenced construction on a state-of-the-art Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Aerospace Hub (MBRAH) in Dubai South. This project, aimed at establishing an advanced narrowbody engine and module MRO center, is a major step forward for the aviation industry in the region and is set to redefine operational standards.
Appointment of Group AMANA as General Contractor
IER MRO has engaged Group AMANA, a leading firm in design and build, to serve as the general contractor for this ambitious project. The undertaking will see the development of MRO4, which represents the first phase of a broader 1.4 million sq. ft. initiative. The focus will be on building an automated engine maintenance facility that harnesses artificial intelligence, robotics, and advanced manufacturing techniques. This facility will streamline engine and major module repair processes, making them more efficient and effective.
Facility Capacity and Features
At full operational capacity, the MRO center will boast the capability to handle up to 550 engine shop visits and approximately 2,000 major engine module overhauls each year. It will incorporate a dedicated twin-engine test cell facility, designed to complete over 1,000 engine tests annually, accommodating engines with thrust ratings reaching up to 100,000 lbs. In addition, the MRO facility will support a wide range of services, including advanced manufacturing, technical training, and aftermarket support, fostering a comprehensive ecosystem for aviation maintenance.
The IER Centre of Excellence and Training Initiatives
As part of the development plan, the IER Centre of Excellence will host a specialized aviation training academy designed to cultivate the next generation of engineers and technicians. This initiative underscores IER MRO’s commitment to enhancing local talent and skillsets, which will be crucial as the aviation sector continues to evolve.
The facility’s digital framework is expected to connect various elements such as assets and processes using cutting-edge digital twin technology. This integration will facilitate real-time tracking, predictive analytics, and AI-supported engineering operations. Furthermore, plans are underway to implement advanced robotic systems to improve logistics, material handling, and technician-assisted activities throughout the facility.
Expert Oversight and Future Prospects
The construction efforts will be overseen by the Bureau of Engineering Studies Consulting Engineers (BEST), ensuring adherence to the highest standards of quality and efficiency. Lawrence J. Howie, Chairman and CEO of IER MRO Industries, emphasized that partnering with Group AMANA marks a critical milestone in actualizing their vision: “We aim to create a next-generation, highly automated, and AI-driven MRO operation in Dubai, featuring advanced capabilities across engine, module, test-cell, and training domains.”
Tariq Alawneh, General Manager of Group AMANA, reaffirmed the project’s significance, highlighting the importance of delivering cutting-edge facilities that will enhance the UAE’s MRO industry for years to come. The initial focus will be on servicing the CFM56 and LEAP engine families, with future expansions planned in advanced manufacturing, component engineering, and additional aftermarket services.
The establishment of this advanced MRO facility not only represents a significant investment in the aviation sector but also marks a step towards making Dubai a vital hub for aerospace operations on a global scale.
