Dubai has emerged as a leader in the global landscape, claiming the second spot in the inaugural Intelligent Cities Index. This remarkable achievement places Dubai above major urban centers like New York, Washington, and Amsterdam, showcasing its commitment to utilizing advanced technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the quality of urban life.
Insights from the Intelligent Cities Index
The Boston Consulting Group released this index, evaluating 61 cities from 39 countries across five key domains: outcomes, strategy, adoption, methods of operation, and enabling factors. The assessment depended on 35 indicators measuring digital transformation. These metrics collectively highlight how effectively cities leverage technology to promote sustainable development and enhance global competitiveness. With a score of 80 points, Dubai secured its position just behind London, which scored 85, and claimed the top rank for AI and smart city solutions.
Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, the director general of Digital Dubai, emphasized that this ranking reflects the city’s ongoing dedication to creating an efficient government and a future-ready metropolis. He noted that such progress stems from an integrated digital ecosystem built on robust data infrastructure and collaborative efforts across various sectors. “In Dubai, AI is not just a burgeoning technology; it serves as a vital catalyst for improving the overall quality of life and fostering economic growth,” Al Mansoori remarked. He affirmed the city’s intention to continue investing in shared digital infrastructures and expanding AI’s application across various industries.
Strategic Two-Year Action Plan
This robust ranking rewards Dubai following the announcement of a two-year action plan designed to integrate advanced AI technologies into the emirate’s private sector. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, the Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister, highlighted the initiative’s significance, stating that comprehensive training programs will be implemented to assist businesses in adopting leading AI solutions. Furthermore, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry has been tasked with creating incubators for Agentic AI firms, aiming to support the high-tech transition and generate more job opportunities for the youth.
The overarching goal is to align this plan with the government’s broader vision of promoting AI for increased efficiency and improved public service quality. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, articulated ambitions for AI to power half of all government services within the next two years. “AI is evolving into more than just a tool; it analyzes, decides, executes, and enhances processes in real-time. It will function as our executive partner to improve services, expedite decision-making, and heighten efficiency,” he noted on his social media.
The progress made by Dubai is mirrored by Abu Dhabi, which also performed commendably on the list, securing the 20th position. This demonstrates that the UAE is firmly committed to leveraging technology for sustainable urban development, establishing itself as a pioneer in the smart city arena.
