Dubai Future Foundation and Oxa Introduce Self-Driving Logistics Startup
The Dubai Future Foundation (DFF) has joined forces with Oxa, a renowned autonomous vehicle technology firm from Oxford, UK, to establish a strategic venture named SHIFFT. The primary objective of SHIFFT is to position Dubai as a leading center for autonomous logistics on a global scale.
Autonomous Vehicles in Key Industries
The SHIFFT initiative will focus on integrating self-driving technology within critical industries such as ports and airports. The venture aims to achieve its inaugural scalable commercial deployment in Dubai before the year 2027 concludes. Utilizing Oxa’s advanced self-driving software, Oxa Driver, along with the Oxa Hub cloud-based fleet management platform, the autonomous systems will offer seamless operational solutions tailored to customer needs. Additionally, Oxa’s hardware systems will facilitate compatibility with existing vehicle fleets, further enhancing the logistics ecosystem.
Enhancing Dubai’s Trade Ambitions
This joint venture aligns with Dubai’s ambitious goal to double its foreign trade volume by 2033. SHIFFT is a crucial part of the emirate’s Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) Programme, a strategic initiative launched by DFF in November 2024. The RDI Programme strives to bolster the knowledge-based economy, generate high-tech job opportunities, and transform Dubai into a regional hub for research and development. According to Khalifa Al Qama, who heads Dubai’s RDI ecosystem, meeting trade targets necessitates persistent innovation and the implementation of solutions that enhance logistics sector efficiency, speed, and resilience.
Creating Economic Opportunities Through Innovation
Khalifa Al Qama emphasizes that SHIFFT embodies the core mission of the RDI Programme by merging global expertise with local capabilities. The aim is to formulate commercially viable solutions that produce a tangible impact in the real world. “Through this joint venture, we are enhancing autonomous mobility, creating fresh economic opportunities, and reinforcing Dubai’s status as a pioneer in the future of logistics,” he stated.
Paul Newman, the founder and CEO of Oxa, articulated that this collaboration will expedite the commercialization of the company’s Industrial Mobile Autonomy (IMA) technology. He explained that the venture will transform regular work vehicles into a digital workforce capable of operating in demanding industrial environments. “By harnessing autonomy, we aim to unlock unprecedented levels of efficiency, reliability, and safety for operators of industrial fleets,” he asserted.
In summary, the collaboration between DFF and Oxa through SHIFFT is set to revolutionize the logistics sector in Dubai. By integrating advanced autonomous vehicle technology, the venture not only targets immediate operational goals but also contributes to broader economic ambitions. This initiative demonstrates Dubai’s commitment to innovation and positions it prominently on the global stage for the future of logistics solutions.
