RIT Dubai introduces BS in MIS to connect business and technology

Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Dubai has introduced a new Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems (BS MIS). This program is tailored to address the technical skill requirements that are increasingly important in the job market, particularly as industries adapt to advancements in AI and digital processes.

Focus on Data and Digital Tools

The BS MIS program emphasizes the integration of data and technology to enhance organizational effectiveness. Students will learn to analyze business processes, utilize information systems for informed decision-making, and design database systems to fulfill various business needs. Contrary to traditional computer science or IT tracks, the MIS curriculum prepares students to align business objectives with technological solutions. This dual focus ensures graduates possess a comprehensive understanding of both business strategy and technical frameworks.

Interdisciplinary Learning and Work Experience

Students in the BS MIS program will engage with multiple disciplines, bridging business, analytics, and computing. This interdisciplinary approach not only fosters collaboration but also enriches the learning experience. A critical feature of this undergraduate program is the mandatory cooperative education (co-op) component, which offers students the chance to gain hands-on experience in professional settings. Such practical exposure ensures that graduates exit the program equipped with both theoretical knowledge and applicable skills.

Accessible Curriculum for All Backgrounds

Designed to accommodate students without a technical background, the program gradually introduces key concepts with a focus on real-world applications rather than intricate engineering details. This inclusive approach allows individuals with interests in both business and technology to explore both fields in a balanced manner. As a result, students can engage with a diverse array of topics while developing a solid foundation for their careers.

Complementary Skills for a Digital Economy

RIT Dubai’s BS MIS curriculum is designed to complement its existing business programs, such as finance, marketing, and global business management. A strong emphasis is placed on skills related to data analysis, database design, business process modeling, systems analysis, and project management. Additionally, effective communication is a priority, equipping students with the ability to articulate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

Dr. Panagiotis Kokkalis, an associate professor and chair of the business department at RIT Dubai, highlighted the growing need for professionals who can bridge the gap between technical and business domains. He noted that, “As organizations increasingly depend on data and digital platforms, it’s crucial to prepare graduates who can understand business needs, communicate effectively with technical teams, and implement successful systems.”

Graduates of the BS MIS program will be well-equipped to excel in a variety of roles, including business analyst, data analyst, systems analyst, IT consultant, ERP specialist, and digital transformation analyst. The degree’s flexibility enables graduates to navigate diverse functions where business and technology intersect, rather than confining them to a single career trajectory.

Applications for the Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems are now being accepted for the Fall 2026 semester, offering an exciting opportunity for students looking to thrive in the digital landscape.
