Why This British Family Calls Dubai Home Forever
British expatriate Pete Jacob, along with his wife and children, embarked on an adventure in Dubai with the intention of a brief stay. Little did they know that this city would transform into their long-term home, enriching both their personal and professional lives.
The Journey to Dubai
In April 2016, Pete, his wife Emilie from France, and their young child relocated to Dubai, expecting to spend just a couple of years in the vibrant city. Ten years later, their plans have shifted dramatically. “We’re still here, and it’s the best choice we’ve ever made,” Pete reflects. The family embraced the diverse opportunities offered in the UAE, with Emilie successfully launching her own interiors styling blog, Stella + The Stars, stating that the UAE’s sunny climate and vibrant atmosphere are rejuvenating for the mind and spirit.
The family enjoys discovering new events, immersing themselves in daily routines, and relishing their experiences in this multicultural hub. For Pete, the initial attraction of the UAE was the vast array of personal and professional opportunities. He noted, “The UAE’s allure was rooted in ambition and adventure, especially for a Brit like me, eager to experience a new culture.”
A Rich Tapestry of Cultures
Dubai is home to a thriving community that represents over 195 nationalities. This rich tapestry caught the attention of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who emphasized the integral role of UAE residents in shaping the city’s identity by stating, “The soul of Dubai is found in its people.” Pete resonates with this sentiment, particularly when observing his three children—Stella, Theodore, and Celeste—appreciating and celebrating the diverse cultures surrounding them.
“This has been a significant realization for me,” Pete shares, noting how his children grow up in a world where multicultural friendships, various languages, and cultural celebrations are part of their everyday life. “They’re developing an international outlook that I believe is one of the UAE’s most precious gifts to families.”
The Uniqueness of UAE Community
The blend of diversity and community found in the UAE is unmatched. Pete, currently the managing director of Current Global PR in Dubai, witnesses this every day within his professional environment. “In a single meeting, you might find individuals from multiple nationalities collaboratively working on a campaign that needs to resonate in both Arabic and English, targeting Emirati, Indian, British, Filipino, Egyptian, Saudi, and Lebanese audiences,” he explains. The seamless understanding across such diverse backgrounds is a testament to the unique community spirit in Dubai.
For those like Pete, who have made the UAE their long-term home, interacting with individuals from various cultures fosters mutual respect and understanding. “Living in this environment has broadened my global perspective, increased my cultural awareness, and made me more comfortable with ambiguity,” he states. “The UAE experience varies for everyone, but for many of us long-term residents, it remains a place that has opened doors to unparalleled opportunities.”
As his family continues to thrive in this remarkable city, Pete acknowledges the profound impact the UAE has had on their lives. The blend of professional ambition, cultural diversity, and family-friendly experiences truly makes Dubai a unique and cherished home.
