Two Arrested in Ctg for Impersonating Detectives in Robbery

The Chattogram Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch has successfully apprehended two suspects linked to a robbery where they masqueraded as detectives. This incident targeted a Bangladeshi national returning from Dubai, highlighting the ongoing challenges of crime in urban areas.

The Arrests and Subsequent Investigations

On February 19, law enforcement officers detained Md Sohel, also known as Sohel Rana, at Kazir Dewri as part of their investigation. His confession led police to conduct a follow-up operation that resulted in the arrest of Uttam Chowdhury, also referred to as Rabi Chowdhury, in the Hathazari area. During the operation, law enforcement seized a substantial amount of cash—approximately Tk 2.50 lakh. This money was allegedly obtained from the sale of gold jewelry taken during the robbery.

Details of the Robbery Incident

The robbery occurred on February 14 along the Wasim Akram Expressway. A gang intercepted the victim’s vehicle shortly after he returned from Dubai, executing the crime with calculated precision. This case serves as a stark reminder of the pressing safety issues confronting travelers and residents alike in the bustling metropolis.

Evidence Recovery and Further Investigations

Following Uttam Chowdhury’s arrest, he provided valuable information that led detectives to Bondhu Sundar Jewellers at the SM Shopping Centre in Hathazari. There, they discovered 69.39 grams of the stolen gold, demonstrating the police’s commitment to recovering stolen property and bringing criminals to justice. Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Shariful Islam indicated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend additional members of the robbery gang, underscoring the extensive nature of this criminal network.

A Criminal Background and Ongoing Efforts

According to Deputy Commissioner Shariful Islam, Sohel Rana has a history of criminal activity, facing three prior cases. These details raise significant concerns about repeat offenders and the need for more effective measures in preventing crime. The DB is actively pursuing leads to dismantle the entire operation behind the robbery, aiming to enhance public safety and deter future criminal activities.

In summary, the successful arrests made by the Chattogram Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch demonstrate the ongoing fight against organized crime in urban areas of Bangladesh. The ongoing investigations not only aim to recover stolen assets but also focus on eliminating the underlying networks that facilitate such crimes. As authorities continue to crack down on these activities, citizens can hope for improved safety and security moving forward.
