Navigating Fear and Faith in Dubai: A Perspective

Navigating Fear and Faith in Dubai: A Perspective

It has been two weeks of upheaval since the conflict began. With missile alerts ringing through our phones and advisories urging us to stay indoors, the atmosphere has felt increasingly tense. As a soon-to-be mother, my instinct to protect the life growing inside me has surged, leading to moments of overwhelming concern. Yet, throughout this ordeal, I have also found a source of strength and reassurances in the actions taken by the United Arab Emirates to safeguard its citizens.

Finding Peace Amidst Chaos

As fear loomed large in the beginning, I have come to recognize the profound comfort that my faith brings. The belief that we are never alone, even in the midst of adversity, serves as my anchor. I draw on the sentiment that divine watchfulness surrounds us, allowing me to focus on the positive amid uncertainty. My role as a school counselor in Dubai has kept me engaged and purposeful, especially during such challenging times. As I support parents and students, it feels as if I’m fulfilling a critical mission during a moment of crisis.

The first week of unrest was chaotic but offered a welcome distraction through work. However, as schools closed for the following week, the emotional weight of the news began to settle in. Tossing and turning at night, I consciously remind myself to remain anchored in faith, searching for tranquility amid the chaos that surrounds us.

Daily Life and Uncertainty

Despite the turmoil, aspects of daily life continue to resemble normality. I still walk our dog in the neighborhood, where the laughter of children reverberates through the streets, providing comfort in these surreal times. Yet, beneath the surface, a current of uncertainty persists. Questions flood our minds: Will the situation worsen? Will schools resume? Is it safe to venture out? The unpredictability makes it tough to decide whether to stay or leave the UAE.

After discussions with my husband, we have collectively decided to remain in Dubai for the time being. With my pregnancy at seven months, flying is discouraged unless absolutely necessary. We feel that leaving would not be the best course of action, primarily because our dog is a beloved part of our family; she would accompany us wherever we go.

A Prayer for Peace

As we navigate this uncertainty, our hearts extend beyond our experiences to those in countries facing even more dire circumstances. It is a reminder of the broader struggles affecting the region and the need for prayer that surpasses our immediate concerns. We eagerly hope for an end to the conflict, not just for our safety but for the relief it would bring to many suffering in silence.

Through these dark times, our church community has been an invaluable source of encouragement. Even though our gatherings are online, the sense of solidarity we feel in virtual prayer meetings has been uplifting. Despite the physical distance, the shared moments of worship provide a feeling of unity that brings peace to our home.

This unexpected situation presents emotional challenges as I navigate the final trimester of my pregnancy. Yet, gratitude fills my heart as we await the arrival of a healthy baby. This turmoil also ignites a fervent desire to pray for future generations, hoping they inherit a world marked by hope rather than conflict. It’s a reminder for all of us to extend our prayers beyond the present, envisioning a brighter future for our children.

Though the news can be disheartening, it is crucial to recognize that hope still exists. The struggle may seem overwhelming, but there are still good things happening around us. In times of darkness, let us seek the light, praying that many find solace in faith amid challenging circumstances across the Middle East.
