Irish expat in Dubai recounts fear from missile strikes

Terror in Dubai: An Expat’s Eye-Witness Account

An Irish expatriate has shared a harrowing account of her experience in Dubai as ballistic missiles illuminated the night sky. Loud explosions disrupted the peace, and emergency alarms echoed throughout the city, leaving residents in a state of shock and fear.

Feeling the Ground Shake

Kerri Murphy, originally from Dublin, recounted the terrifying moment when her home trembled, with windows rattling from the force of the blasts. Alarming notifications urged families to take shelter and remain indoors, escalating the anxiety throughout the city. “I felt nauseous, as if my entire body went numb,” Kerri said, capturing the panic felt by countless residents.

As tensions escalated in the region, the expat community found itself glued to their devices, seeking updates while trying to maintain a sense of normalcy for their children amidst the chaos. Kerri has lived in Dubai for 11 years with her husband and two children, yet nothing could have prepared them for that fateful night.

A Disturbing Call

The unsettling events began when relatives vacationing in Abu Dhabi alerted Kerri to the situation. “They called us with news of fighter jets and explosions,” she explained, emphasizing her disbelief that Dubai could be affected. Initially hearing faint bangs, her concerns intensified when messages flooded her WhatsApp group, which comprised fellow Irish mothers living in Dubai.

They reported similar disturbances—“loud bangs and shaking houses” spread across numerous neighborhoods, particularly in Townsquare and Mira areas. Online videos showed missiles being intercepted over the city, forcing Kerri and her family to confront an unthinkable reality.

Unexpected Night of Fear

As the night progressed, the situation escalated further. “Later that evening, we heard a substantial impact,” Kerri recalled. The anxiety peaked when her family received another alert around 12:30 a.m., instructing them to take cover and remain away from windows. At that moment, Kerri felt an overwhelming wave of fear, prompting her to prioritize reassurance for her children.

This unnerving alarm marked a night filled with distressing sounds and unsettling news. “We had to explain to the kids what was happening, and I felt a responsibility to stay composed for their sake,” she said. Explosions continued into the early morning, leaving families anxious about the safety of their nearby airport.

A Community Coming Together

In the wake of the missile attacks, which led to one death and 11 injuries due to falling debris, thousands of flights were grounded, marking significant disruption reminiscent of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the fear that gripped many, Kerri noted a sense of unity among the Dubai community. “Even with everything going on, local authorities are doing their best to keep us safe,” she shared.

Other residents like Maria Gilbert from Wicklow, who also experienced the attacks firsthand, echoed similar sentiments. Taking to social media, she reassured her followers, describing the terrifying night but also reaffirming her family’s safety. “We are okay, but it was genuinely frightening,” she stated.

As they navigate these unprecedented challenges, Kerri and others emphasize the importance of community support during such tumultuous times. “In the midst of chaos, we are looking out for one another, and that’s what truly matters,” she concluded, hopeful for a peaceful resolution ahead.
