Stella Njoroge’s Journey in Dubai: From Struggles to Empowering Women

Stella Wamaitha Njoroge, a Kenyan native, embarked on a transformative journey when she arrived in Dubai in February 2020. At just 23, she anticipated a swift transition into her new life in the UAE. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted her plans, pushing her into a world of uncertainty and financial strain.

Facing Challenges Amidst a Pandemic

When COVID-19 struck, Njoroge found herself without a job and rapidly depleting her savings, leaving her unable to pay rent. This daunting situation pushed her into a corner as she approached her landlord, a Lebanese gentleman, to explain her predicament. To her surprise, rather than demanding payment or eviction, he offered her the opportunity to stay in the apartment rent-free for three months. This act of kindness left an indelible mark on her life, sparking a shift in her perspective.

Experiencing such generosity in a foreign land made Njoroge realize that the kindness she encountered wasn’t a unique occurrence but rather a defining aspect of Dubai’s diverse and vibrant community. She reflected, “It made me think — what a place this is, where people from completely different continents hold your hand unconditionally.” This spirit of hospitality served as a cornerstone for her future endeavors.

Building Connections Across Borders

Eager to pay this kindness forward, Njoroge became a business setup advisor, helping fellow Africans navigate the complexities of relocating to the UAE. By engaging with individuals from various backgrounds, she found a rich tapestry of friendships that transcended geographical boundaries. “I am very intentional about meeting new people. I consider myself a serial networker,” she explained. Her connections not only offered her support but also expanded her worldview, creating a global family that welcomed her with open arms.

On her last birthday, Njoroge traveled to Egypt and, through her Dubai connections, enjoyed a heartfelt reunion with a friend she had met years earlier. His hospitality turned what could have been a tourist experience into a genuine homecoming. “In that moment, Egypt didn’t feel like a foreign country, it felt like home. And to me, that is a direct reflection of Dubai’s spirit,” she shared.

Empowering African Women Through Community

Inspired by her positive experiences and the need for visibility among African women in business, Njoroge co-founded the “She Means Business Network” in Dubai. This initiative aims to empower women of color and African professionals by providing them access to opportunities and resources. Currently, the network hosts 100 registered members who participate in curated events, panels, and networking sessions that culminate in shared success stories.

Reflecting on her path, Njoroge emphasized that her achievements are a testament to the vibrant community of Dubai that fosters collaboration among individuals from vastly different backgrounds. “Dubai is one of the world’s most successful cultural melting pots. It’s a space where diversity is not just present, but actively experienced,” she noted. This communal spirit allows friendships to blossom, forming a chosen family based on shared values and aspirations rather than nationality.

Njoroge encourages newcomers to Dubai to embrace its unique environment without preconceived notions, emphasizing that the city’s true magic lies not just in its diversity but in the openness of its people. She believes that in this remarkable city, one can feel a sense of belonging, often surpassing their expectations, as long as they remain open to the connections and opportunities surrounding them.
