A Family’s Contemplation of Change After Life in Dubai

Jason Kwao and his wife, Sumekka Selliah-Kwao, are navigating a pivotal moment in their lives following their relocation to Dubai. Initially drawn by opportunities for business and an appealing lifestyle, recent events have prompted them to reconsider their future in the city. Tragically, the death of Jason’s brother coupled with unsettling geopolitical tensions has significantly altered their perspective on life in Dubai.

From Dreams to Disillusionment in Dubai

The couple, both 29 and 28 respectively, moved to the Dubailand area in December 2023, enthralled by the idea of raising their young children in a sun-soaked environment. They settled into a three-bedroom villa complete with a pool, all while forging plans to build a prosperous business. However, barely three years into their residency, the charm of Dubai has begun to wane. Jason recently remarked that the city feels increasingly “plastic and not real,” igniting their desire to seek a more enriching environment.

Their situation took a turn when they decided to put their belongings in storage and temporarily return to the UK in the wake of his brother Joshua’s death. The couple felt a growing sense of unease, sparked by missile strikes in the region and a palpable atmosphere of tension. “What we imagined as our future in Dubai has increasingly felt devoid of community and integrity,” Jason explained, noting that the city’s focus seems skewed towards financial gain and transactional relationships.

A Shift Towards Family Values in Ghana

Now, the couple is exploring the possibility of moving to Ghana, drawn by its sense of community and family-centered values. Having visited the country and fallen in love with its culture, they feel a compelling urge to provide their children—Sofia Amari, 5, and Amias, 1—with a nurturing environment. “After experiencing the tension in Dubai, we began to question whether we were investing too much energy into our business rather than fostering a supportive community,” Jason added, longing to create a “village” where their family can thrive.

Jason’s entrepreneurial journey in Dubai initially appeared fruitful. He and Sumekka co-founded a successful business, which generated substantial income shortly after launch. They lived the lifestyle they had envisioned, yet as time passed, Jason realized that the city lacked essential morals and values he wished to impart to his children. Citing the culture of transactional relationships, he expressed his desire for a more compassionate upbringing for his family.

Rediscovering Purpose Amidst Life Changes

With the culmination of various factors—his brother’s untimely passing and the ongoing war—Jason feels compelled to reassess their life choices. Currently back in Croydon, he is focused on planning his brother’s funeral while contemplating a more permanent move to Ghana. He reflected on his experiences in Africa, noting the joy and richness of life that thrives even in adversity. “I want my children to learn about kindness and unconditional love, rather than getting entangled in the pursuit of wealth,” he emphasized.

Despite the beauty and allure of Dubai, Jason revealed that the city has its cracks—cracks that have become more visible to him after returning from their travels. Rather than a place to cultivate lifelong friendships, he describes Dubai as more of a business hub. As they move forward, the Kwao family seeks a place that aligns with their values and offers a more genuine connection to community. In contemplating their future, they acknowledge the importance of finding a balance between ambition and nurturing personal relationships.
