Belarusian Woman Shares Expenses of Returning Home from Dubai
In 2022, Iryna Shmat’s vacation in Dubai transformed into a prolonged stay that would redefine her life. Initially planned as a brief getaway, she and her partner found themselves settling into a new routine far from their home in Belarus. This unexpected shift led Iryna on a journey of self-discovery, adaptability, and cultural experiences.
From Pharmacist to Housewife: A New Identity
Iryna had a stable career as a pharmacist in Belarus, but she often pondered exploring other avenues. Before her trip, she would have laughed if someone had suggested she would leave her job, relocate to a foreign city, and embrace the role of a homemaker while becoming fluent in English. However, upon arriving in Dubai, she faced a reality filled with uncertainty and challenges. With only $500 in her pocket and minimal English skills, the transition was overwhelming. Nevertheless, her partner, Dmitry, provided the reassurance she needed, taking charge of their new lives.
The most difficult aspect for Iryna was adjusting to her new role while staying connected with friends and family back home. Video calls and messages replaced face-to-face interactions, leading her to feel isolated at times. The pressure of adapting to her new identity as a housewife was significant, leaving her feeling anxious and withdrawn. She humorously referred to her finances as a “wife’s salary,” reflecting on her efforts to manage expenses wisely.
The Strength of Partnership in Unpredictable Times
Despite the challenges, Iryna believed that their unplanned move ultimately strengthened her relationship with Dmitry. Before embarking on this journey, they had been dating for only six months and had not yet lived together. Collaborating to navigate their new environment brought them closer. Eight months into their new life, they also purchased a car, which opened the doors for adventurous explorations across Dubai. This newfound freedom inspired Iryna to document their experiences on Instagram, showcasing off-the-beaten-path destinations and immersive local culture.
After a year and a half, she finally adjusted to her surroundings. Iryna later conducted a cost comparison experiment between her life in Dubai and her previous existence in Belarus. Surprisingly, she found that a typical day in Minsk—a coffee at McDonald’s, lunch with friends, and shopping—was only marginally cheaper than a similar day in Dubai.
Returning to Belarus: Challenges and Costs of Repatriation
After four years, Iryna and Dmitry decided to return to Belarus. Primary reasons included Iryna’s concern over her medical diploma and the recognition that they could no longer sustain their previously comfortable lifestyle in Dubai. The oppressive heat and lack of green spaces also contributed to their decision, prompting them to seek a more relaxed atmosphere.
The process of moving back came with its own set of financial challenges. Between plane tickets, the necessity to furnish a new apartment, and the costs associated with selling their belongings, they estimated that their relocation expenses totaled around $11,000 to $12,000. Iryna reflected on how stressful the organization of their return had been, emphasizing the pressure of the move on their emotional well-being.
Adapting back to life in Belarus proved to be another hurdle. Iryna mentioned feelings of displacement, as if returning not to her home but to a different country. The stagnation in Minsk during their absence was disheartening, as was the stark contrast in services compared to Dubai. While they appreciated the savings they could achieve in Belarus, the inefficiencies of local systems became a source of frustration for Iryna, who found herself longing for the conveniences they once enjoyed.
This journey has highlighted the remarkable capacity for personal growth, resilience, and the incredible strength of relationships forged in the face of adversity.
