Dubai unveils initiative to boost creative sector with workspaces
Dubai is taking significant steps to bolster its creative sector and enhance its cultural economy. This initiative aligns with the vision of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, aiming to foster a vibrant arts landscape in the emirate.
Introduction of the Creative Sector Resilience Portfolio
The newly unveiled ‘Creative Sector Resilience Portfolio’ by Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum represents a vital component of a broader economic support strategy worth AED 1 billion (approximately $272 million). This program is designed to reinforce crucial sectors in Dubai, ensuring that the cultural and creative industries receive the attention and funding they deserve.
Key Focus Areas
This portfolio targets five essential areas: cultural infrastructure, creative production, audience engagement, talent development, and enhancing cultural impact. Implementation will occur in phases, gradually rolling out various initiatives aimed at uplifting artists and cultural organizations. One of the primary objectives is to provide greater access to workspaces. In collaboration with entities such as Dubai Municipality, Dubai CommerCity, and Expo City Dubai, free multi-purpose venues will be accessible to the creative community. In addition, partnerships with Letswork will offer alternative workspaces, fostering collaboration and project showcases.
Furthermore, the initiative presents numerous funding and commissioning opportunities. This includes the Dubai Cultural Grant, micro-grants facilitated in partnership with Art Jameel, and a micro-commissioning program in collaboration with Luxuriant Design. Additionally, there’s dedicated support for exhibitions linked with Art Dubai, which will help emerging talents gain exposure.
Talent Development and Visibility
Talent enhancement is another critical focus in the portfolio. Continuous e-learning programs in partnership with LinkedIn, along with targeted workshops and training sessions, are aimed at helping creatives engage more effectively with audiences and discover new opportunities.
Moreover, the initiative seeks to elevate the visibility of creative work through strategic partnerships, such as the collaboration with Majid Al Futtaim’s ‘Ma’an’ program. This partnership will provide access to retail and exhibition spaces, combined with promotional opportunities across various digital platforms.
Transformative Cultural Impact
The portfolio also aims to bring creativity into public spaces, making art accessible to a wider audience. Collaborating with PHI Advertising, projects will be showcased on outdoor billboards throughout the city, promoting cultural engagement and enhancing public appreciation for the arts.
This initiative was preceded by the ‘Creative Sector Resilience’ workshop organized by Dubai Culture and the Dubai Future Foundation, facilitating dialogues among key sector stakeholders. With the launch of the Creative Sector Resilience Portfolio, Dubai is not only reinforcing its commitment to the creative industries but is also working towards building a more connected, sustainable cultural ecosystem.
