Elbi’s Move to Dubai

Elbi moved to Dubai in January 2025, attracted by the prospect of a safer environment and a more pleasant climate compared to the UK, where she cited a high crime rate and miserable weather as significant drawbacks. However, recent events have forced her to reevaluate her choice. For the past several days, she has found herself confined to her 46th-floor apartment as drones have been intercepted overhead.

The Perils of High-Rise Living

Sleepless nights have become a common occurrence for Elbi as she grapples with the anxiety that a drone or debris could strike her building. In her own words, she expressed that she’d prefer to “sleep outside on the floor” than remain in such a precarious situation. The advice she received was simple yet alarming: “Keep one window of your house slightly open so that if there is any pressure from outside, it can balance instead of shattering.”

Elbi, who works as a personal trainer, articulated her concerns about living so high up. “I really struggled to sleep because I know we’re really high. I’d rather be on the floor outside than be in a high-rise building,” she admitted. The proximity to danger has impacted not only her but also others in the area. While she can see the bustling downtown and Business Bay from her apartment, residents on the marina side have begun to evacuate. The atmosphere has turned tense as everyone is glued to their devices, anxiously waiting for updates.

The unsettling situation escalated when residents received emergency alerts instructing them to shelter in place. Elbi recalled the sheer fear and chaos that followed: “It’s been so scary. We were told to take shelter and stock up on essentials. We heard screaming and shouting outside our door. It was a family of eight running to the basement with mattresses and pillows.” The terror of living on the 46th floor in such times is palpable; the height amplifies the fear felt by all.

Despite the mounting anxiety and peril, Elbi has discovered a sense of community in Dubai that she felt was lacking in the UK. She noted, “I actually feel less lonely than I did in the UK. There are so many people checking up on you. It’s nice to see the community come together.” Yet, she acknowledged the eerie nature of the current situation—a mix of unity and tension that makes life in the city uniquely challenging.
