Scottish Expat Celebrates Success After Leaving UK’s Pessimism
Calum White, an entrepreneur from Edinburgh, has embraced a more optimistic business environment in Dubai, and his success story illustrates the potential for growth outside the UK. After leaving behind what he describes as a “blame culture,” he has carved a prominent place in the UAE’s real estate market, marking five years of impressive expansion in his firm.
From Disillusionment to Opportunity
Disappointed with the UK’s attitude towards success, Calum made the decision to relocate to Dubai a decade ago. Initially joining the property market as a leasing broker, he soon realized the vast opportunities available in the region. His determination has led to the founding of White & Co. Real Estate, which started with just eight employees in January 2021. Fast forward to today, and the company has grown exponentially, now employing around 600 individuals and achieving an impressive turnover of £63 million, approximately 307 million UAE Dirhams.
Profits have soared to £8.6 million, and Calum views this achievement as validation of his decision to leave the UK. He reflects on his upbringing and the desire to escape the negative mindset he felt was prevalent in the UK. “I was determined to get out into the world… I wanted to leave, so I moved to Dubai,” White shared, highlighting his journey from disappointment to entrepreneurial success.
A Supportive Business Landscape
In Dubai, White has experienced a culture that encourages success rather than one that penalizes it. According to him, the differences between the UK and Dubai are stark. While the UK tends to focus on experience and tenure, the UAE emphasizes performance in evaluating success. “Here, they say ‘well done’ when you’re doing well, and genuinely mean it,” he remarked, emphasizing the supportive environment for entrepreneurs. This attitude has contributed significantly to his company’s growth and provides a refreshing contrast to the UK’s working culture.
With four floors of office space in Control Tower at Motor City, White & Co. Real Estate has become the largest ‘western’ brokerage operation in Dubai, employing primarily staff from the UK. Among the 600 employees, around 400 brokers work on a commission-only basis, and 200 hold salaried positions, contributing to a vibrant and competitive atmosphere.
Future Ambitions
White remains driven for further growth in the coming year, with revenue targets set at £83 million, or approximately 400 million UAE Dirhams. He acknowledges the strength of the Dubai real estate sector, noting that more individuals are finding success in this booming market faster than ever before. White believes that with the right tools and support, anyone can achieve financial success in Dubai’s favorable environment.
His top broker earned a staggering £4 million in tax-free income last year, emphasizing the lucrative potential for dedicated professionals in this sector. However, Calum also warns that distractions can be abundant in Dubai. “It’s the best place in the world for opportunity, but it’s also the best place for distractions,” he cautioned.
Ultimately, Calum White’s journey illustrates the transformative power of a supportive business environment. His story serves as an inspiration to those in the UK feeling hindered by negativity, encouraging them to seek opportunities elsewhere and shape their futures in a more optimistic and growth-oriented culture.
