Sheikh Hamdan Launches Driverless RT6 Taxis in Dubai
Dubai has recently taken a significant leap towards the future of transportation with the launch of its fully autonomous RT6 taxi vehicles. This initiative is part of the emirate’s broader plan to incorporate advanced artificial intelligence within its transportation system, setting the stage for a new era of urban mobility.
Milestone Launch by Sheikh Hamdan
The operational phase of the autonomous RT6 taxi was inaugurated by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai and a key figure in the emirate’s governance. Demonstrating the vehicle’s capabilities, Sheikh Hamdan took a ride in one of the autonomous taxis to the World Government Summit held at Madinat Jumeirah. This journey was not just a ceremonial act; it showcased the vehicle’s readiness for real-world conditions, operating amidst live traffic on city roads. The public rollout of this service is expected to occur in the first quarter of 2026, showcasing Dubai’s commitment to innovative transportation solutions.
Advanced Technology Features
The RT6 taxi, developed by Baidu Apollo Go, signifies the sixth generation of autonomous taxi technology and is tailored for widespread use. It boasts over 40 sensors, including high-precision LiDAR, multi-band radars, and sophisticated cameras, enabling it to accurately perceive its environment. This reliability is crucial for navigating dynamic traffic scenarios and ensuring adherence to safety standards and regulations. During his ride, Sheikh Hamdan was briefed on the vehicle’s operating system, which utilizes artificial intelligence and advanced sensing technologies to guarantee safe and smooth transportation.
Data-Driven Transportation
The vehicle’s efficiency is further enhanced by a robust software infrastructure that integrates real-time data, high-definition mapping, and deep learning algorithms. This allows the RT6 taxi to interact seamlessly with traffic signals, pedestrians, and other road users, making it capable of adapting to various urban scenarios. The technology is built upon extensive experience, with Baidu Apollo Go having accrued more than 150 million kilometers of safe operation and completing over 10 million autonomous trips across various cities.
Collaborative Efforts for Progress
The successful launch of the autonomous taxi service stems from a collaboration between the Roads and Transport Authority and Baidu Apollo Go, cemented during discussions at the World Government Summit 2025. The rapid progression from planning to real-time operations within a span of approximately 10 months reflects Dubai’s regulatory efficiency and its readiness for smart infrastructure. As part of this initiative, Baidu Apollo Go has also established its first control center for autonomous vehicle operations outside of China in the Dubai Science Park. This facility, covering 2,000 square meters, manages daily operations, software updates, maintenance, and safety evaluations, ensuring the highest standards of service and reliability.
With plans to expand the fleet to over 1,000 autonomous vehicles in the coming years, Dubai is reinforcing its vision of becoming a frontrunner in smart and sustainable mobility solutions. The introduction of these driverless taxis signifies not just a technological milestone but also a transformative approach to how urban transport will evolve, enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
