Dubai: A Lifelong Learning Journey for a Sri Lankan Expat
Sasha Sequeira, a Sri Lankan expat born in the UAE, credits the nation’s vision, ambition, and humanitarian spirit for shaping her own aspirations. Throughout her 29 years, she has witnessed the extraordinary growth of Dubai, which she describes as a vibrant and dynamic environment constantly evolving. The city’s remarkable pace and efficiency in various areas have significantly influenced her life, sparking inspiration and personal development.
The Rapid Transformation of Dubai
Sequeira’s journey through Dubai has been marked by an astonishing transformation. Growing up in the late 1990s, she never anticipated the skyline and infrastructure that define the city today. “You can drive past a site under construction one day, and the next, you’re greeted by a completed structure,” she reflects. This rapid development has not only reshaped the cityscape but also instilled a sense of urgency and purpose in those who reside there. The efficiency with which processes are handled—from government documentation to everyday errands—sets Dubai apart from other global cities, making life more convenient and streamlined for its residents.
Having grown up in a family with deep ties to the UAE, Sequeira’s connection to the country extends back to her grandparents, who arrived in 1984. The UAE has been the backdrop for many of her life milestones, from schooling to her marriage and her journey into motherhood. “Every significant moment has taken place here,” she states, emphasizing the area’s integral role in her story. The support she received from the community, especially Emiratis, during challenging times has left a lasting impact on her outlook. An Emirati acquaintance of her grandmother once went out of her way to assist Sequeira in obtaining a visa during a family crisis, exemplifying the generosity she often encountered.
The Importance of Community Support
Sequeira often reflects on the unyielding support she has received throughout her life in the UAE, which has reinforced her belief in community bonds. During a difficult financial period, her university stepped up to assist her by offering a substantial fee reduction, allowing her to complete her education. “They were determined to ensure I graduated,” she recalls gratefully. This community spirit, present during personal trials and collective challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, reiterates her commitment to pay it forward. She believes that if you receive help, it’s essential to extend that same kindness to others.
Her mother’s faith in the UAE has also provided her with a sense of security, particularly during tumultuous times. Sequeira fondly remembers her mother’s reassurance that living in the UAE was the safest option, a sentiment that has shaped her own perspectives on security and well-being. With a young daughter, she cherishes this sense of safety and is grateful for the swift support systems available. “Regardless of whether you’re a resident or a visitor, the UAE takes care of everyone,” she remarks.
Looking Forward: Embracing Opportunities
Currently, Sequeira thrives as a marketing and communications executive at Curtin University in Dubai. The recently launched ‘Dubai-it’ initiative, aimed at transforming ambitious ideas into reality, resonates deeply with her. It evokes feelings of nostalgia while reinforcing the notion that growth is a collective endeavor. “Seeing the country flourish motivates me to strive for my own growth,” she affirms. This youthful enthusiasm for development is something she hopes to instill in her daughter as well.
Taking her daughter to places that held significance in her own childhood—like the Deira City Centre—offers Sequeira a unique perspective. The familiarity of these spaces offers comfort while highlighting the city’s evolution. More than just a backdrop for her life events, Dubai has nurtured her growth and resilience, teaching her the value of generosity and community support. “Having been cared for here, I feel compelled to give back,” she concludes.
As she continues to witness the UAE’s growth, Sequeira remains committed to her aspirations, buoyed by the support of a dynamic and caring community. “This country keeps evolving, and I want to evolve with it,” she asserts, firmly stating, “There’s no place I would rather be.”
