Growing up in Dubai: Not a bubble, but a ‘superpower’

I’m part of the Gen Z generation that grew up in Dubai. This city has not only provided me with a place to live but has profoundly influenced my worldview.

The Dubai Experience: More than Just a Home

There’s a common joke that often follows introductions among those unfamiliar with my background: “You live in a bubble.” Initially, I couldn’t comprehend why being part of this unique environment was seen as an insult. To me, this bubble is a source of pride. Growing up in Dubai has shaped my perspective in ways I’m just beginning to understand. It’s not merely about having an address; it’s about the rich tapestry of experiences that come with living in such a multicultural hub.

The first thing people often fail to grasp about those of us raised in Dubai is our upbringing. Labels like religion, nationality, and wealth never dictated friendships. We were surrounded by diversity, with friends hailing from various backgrounds and cultures. In our schools and social circles, a blending of traditions was the norm. Birthdays brought flavors from across the globe, and sleepovers were opportunities to explore customs outside our own. For us, diversity felt like a natural part of life rather than a buzzword.

Leaving the Bubble: A New Perspective

It wasn’t until I ventured abroad for my master’s degree that I truly understood the concept of the “Dubai bubble.” Suddenly, the world revealed itself in a way I hadn’t experienced before. People around me were asking questions about backgrounds and identities that had never crossed my mind. They placed importance on labels that I had always viewed as secondary to character and shared experiences. Instead of feeling ashamed of my upbringing, I embraced it, realizing that what others saw as a bubble was, in fact, an incredible privilege.

One of the most valuable lessons Dubai instills is the power of kindness. In this city, helping a stranger is commonplace, whether it’s offering directions or simply checking in on someone having a rough day. There exists an underlying sense of community that makes everyone feel connected, a realization that hits hard when you’re away from it. This atmosphere fosters a spirit of teamwork, urging us all to lift each other up.

A Culture of Ambition

Having traveled to various places, I appreciate the unique experiences each destination offers, but nothing resonates with me quite like Dubai. It’s not solely the iconic skyline or luxurious lifestyle; it’s the optimistic mindset that’s embedded in the culture. Here, dreaming big is not only encouraged but expected. Ambition is a shared trait, and the city’s ethos propels individuals to reach for the extraordinary. Growing up among such aspirations leads you to believe that limitations are simply challenges waiting to be overcome, prompting a sense of confidence that continues beyond the city boundaries.

Moreover, Dubai’s unmatched standard of excellence permeates everyday life. Everything from the architecture to the cuisine is filled with high-quality attention to detail. This culture of excellence shapes our expectations and influences how we approach both personal and professional endeavors. It instills a yearning for quality and pushes us to think beyond conventional boundaries.

In my encounters abroad, I notice an immediate expectation when others learn I’m from Dubai. They assume I’m well-versed in various cultures and possess insights about the best experiences the city has to offer. The truth is, they’re usually spot-on. Growing up in Dubai has made us adaptable and comfortable in diverse settings, which sets us apart on a global scale. Instead of being intimidated by differences, we embrace them, informed by a lifetime of interactions with individuals from all walks of life.

In summary, my upbringing in Dubai was not a sheltered existence; it was a robust preparation for the world outside. If people wish to call it a bubble, I welcome that label. According to my experiences, if that bubble teaches the importance of kindness, limits are meant to be pushed, and cultures should be celebrated, then perhaps we could all benefit from a few more bubbles like Dubai.
