Erdoğan promises ongoing economic progress and benefits.

On May 18, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan commended Türkiye’s business sector for its vital role in fostering economic advancement and facilitating disaster recovery. He reiterated his commitment to implementing policies that will enhance exports and mitigate inflation, all while navigating various global economic challenges.

Support for Economic Growth and Resilience

During an event hosted by the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye (TOBB), Erdoğan highlighted the organization’s importance, referring to it as the “locomotive of Türkiye and our economy.” He noted that TOBB ranks as the world’s third-largest chamber system in terms of service production. In recognition of their notable contributions, Erdoğan presented plaques to 25 influential business leaders who have significantly impacted the nation’s economy and trade landscape.

“Our honorees have blazed the trail for our country with their dedication and hard work,” Erdoğan remarked. He acknowledged their unwavering passion and commitment to serving Türkiye, emphasizing the vital role they play in the country’s progress.

Corporate Responsibility and Innovation

In the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes on February 6, 2023, Erdoğan praised TOBB for its dedication to assisting affected communities. He stated that the organization mobilized its resources efficiently to provide relief and aid in housing construction for those impacted by the disaster.

Additionally, Erdoğan pointed to the collaboration between the business sector and the development of Türkiye’s homegrown electric vehicle brand, TOGG. He highlighted the success of TOGG, noting that these vehicles are increasingly making their presence known on roads across several European nations.

Economic Performance and Projections

Defending his government’s economic record, Erdoğan asserted that Türkiye has demonstrated remarkable resilience against external economic pressures, despite facing rising global protectionism and regional tensions. “In the midst of regional conflicts, we managed to grow our economy by 3.6 percent last year,” he stated confidently.

He shared that Türkiye’s national income has now reached $1.6 trillion, with per capita income rising to $18,000. The country’s foreign trade volume has surged to $820 billion, with exports of goods and services reaching an impressive $396 billion. “We are on track to exceed $400 billion shortly,” he affirmed.

Addressing Economic Challenges

While Erdoğan remains optimistic about Türkiye’s economic achievements, he acknowledged the persistent economic challenges and rising prices that many citizens face. He assured the public that the government is vigilant in monitoring market conditions and consumer sentiment. “We understand that not everything is perfect. Our perspective on the economy encompasses more than just statistics,” he said.

He also addressed inflation concerns and criticized businesses engaging in what he termed “opportunism,” indicating that such behavior is unjustified given the context of production and transportation costs. Moreover, Erdoğan countered negative portrayals of the Turkish economy, insisting that while they strive to dismantle feelings of stagnation, certain factions continually attempt to impede progress. “We will keep pushing forward and achieving new milestones,” he concluded.
