Dubai’s Response to Iranian Attacks — The Insider
Dmitry and his family relocated to Dubai from Russia in 2022, and like many newcomers, they faced immediate challenges. Initially, the tension was palpable. “In the first few days, it was quite frightening,” Dmitry recalls. He notes that while emergency alerts have now become a part of daily life, the intensity of the situation has lessened significantly. “These days, we receive one or two emergency alerts throughout the day and the same amount at night. Sometimes, you can hear distant explosions shortly after,” he explains.
### Developing Coping Mechanisms in Crisis
To cope with the alerts, Dmitry’s family has crafted their own rituals. They often wait out air raids in the bathroom, turning a stressful situation into a somewhat comforting time. “The kids bring pillows and blankets to make a little nest,” he shares. “They lie there with their tablets and phones. The youngest even brings in the parrot’s cage and our dog. We all sit together until the all-clear message comes.” Despite the games and distractions, the fear is real, especially for the youngest. “After every alert, he runs to the bathroom, scared to sleep alone. They ask why this is happening to us. We try to reassure them that this will eventually end,” Dmitry adds.
However, not all residents have chosen to stay. Some have made the difficult decision to leave. A user on Threads revealed, “We ran away from Dubai. We hadn’t planned to leave at all.” Their circumstances shifted dramatically as the family’s one-year lease was ending. They were in the process of moving when the situation escalated, leaving them anxious. An unexpected shift to online education for children pushed them to make the difficult choice to exit the city, compounded by the worries of anxious relatives.
### Education and Its Evolution Amidst Uncertainty
Dmitry confirms that shifts in the educational landscape have become an integral part of daily life in Dubai. “Schools switched to online instruction in the weeks following the holidays,” he explains. He anticipates this mode of learning will continue for the rest of the school year, as safety remains paramount.
On the other hand, many residents, like Svetlana, remain committed to staying in Dubai. She observes that the departures are isolated and that for most, there’s no compelling reason to leave. “While some panic, they represent a small fraction of the population. Others have left for Oman, abandoning their pets. We feel safe as we witnessed firsthand how effective the air defense system is,” she states, recalling the day they watched missiles being intercepted from Bluewaters.
### Economic Repercussions of the Ongoing Situation
Life in Dubai has undoubtedly evolved due to the ongoing crises. The economic landscape is feeling the strain, particularly in tourism, real estate, and business. Remarkably, the UAE had previously topped global charts in foreign direct investment relative to GDP, but the current situation has made some investors reconsider their options. Discussions among Asian investors about moving their assets elsewhere have become increasingly common.
The real estate sector is also showing signs of a slowdown. Rental prices have decreased, and property sales have seen a significant year-on-year decline of 31%. This figure is more stark when compared to the previous month, where the transactions dropped by over 50%. Brokers and industry experts agree that the market is entering a downturn, signaling a tough economic period ahead for Dubai.
