Wimbledon to implement video review tech – Dubai Eye 103.8

Wimbledon is set to implement video review technology this year, allowing players to challenge certain calls made by chair umpires. This modernization aims to enhance the fairness and integrity of the matches at one of tennis’s most prestigious Grand Slam tournaments.

New Challenges for Players

While players won’t be able to contest decisions made by the electronic line calling (ELC) system that debuted at Wimbledon last year, the video review technology will provide opportunities to assess specific judgement calls. These include situations such as whether a ball has bounced twice or if it made contact with a player’s racket or body. The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) indicated in a statement that players could challenge judgments related to point-ending calls like “not-up,” “foul shot,” or “touch.” They can do this either when they stop play immediately after a call or right after a point concludes if they believe there’s hindrance.

Unlimited Reviews Available

In a groundbreaking move, the new policy allows players to request as many reviews as they wish throughout their matches. This unlimited challenge option intends to empower players and foster a more dynamic competitive environment. The introduction of video reviews on six main show courts, including the iconic Centre Court and Court One, indicates Wimbledon’s commitment to using technology to improve the sport.

Visibility Enhancements

Alongside the video review system, Wimbledon will also introduce visual indicators for the ELC. Scoreboards across all courts will display clear information regarding “out” and “fault” calls, making it easier for players and spectators to understand the decisions being made during matches. This initiative not only enhances the spectator experience but also aids in maintaining transparency within the sport.

What’s Next for Wimbledon

The upcoming Wimbledon, commencing on June 29, 2023, is set to feature these exciting technological advancements. With a focus on fair play and player empowerment, the integration of these systems promises to reshape the way the game is played. As tennis evolves technologically, fans can look forward to a more engaging and accurate experience during this historic tournament.
